earlier today I stood at the store wondering which pencils to buy and thought I might have gone crazy. Wish I had seen this thread first! Glad to know I'm not the only person who considered this obsessive detail.

At first I thought this was a fairly ridiculous question. I've been just practicing with "office-max" standard number 2 pencils for the past several months, without being aware of how much they suck. Today, I opened up a brand new batch of Skillcraft #2 Medium. I gotta give some love to skillcraft. The lead just melts onto the paper at the perfect rate, and the eraser is extremely effective but doesn't leave a bunch of gunk or smear. I've used the black warrior, but I think Skillcraft takes the cake.

That said, just use anything that is NOT the cheap "officemax" "staples" etc. generic brands.

So far the dixon black ticonderogas are pretty much perfect for the job.
Lead stays sharp for whole tests and the eraser on one pencil could last the whole test and then some. It doesn't smear, the pencil is stiff and difficult to bend at all.
Eraser functions perfectly with no streaks/smudges and completely removes the lead.

I'm sold.

So, since it seems like we all have staked out our pencils, the next question is this: short point (what you might get from the old fashioned sharpeners with the razor blade) or long point (the point from an electric sharpener or the crank sharpeners in classrooms)?

Wow. I thought I was the only one who was aware of the mighty Dixon Ticonderoga. I credit that pencil with my 10pt score increase on test day...and I'm only half kidding....

Are you kidding? Higher than your PTs or diag? If PTs then Im going to go buy 100 of these suckers.

I almost bought these, but I couldn't figure out why they were black and any different from the regular yellow Ticonderogas. Then I told myself that it was too cool for me and probably for some other special purpose (drafting?). Then I feared that the blackness meant that the lead was extra black, which would make bubbles hard to erase. I spent about 5 minutes debating this.

Now that I read this thread, I realize they're just regular, except black and cool-looking. Still too cool for me.

Sadly, I will be using cheapo generic pencils. I discovered this thread too late.
