Barack O'Drama wrote:So I'm officially in for December! Signed up and ready to go!

What is everyone using for prep materials?

I'm using:

Manhattan LSAT Trilogy
The LSAT Trainer
7Sage Starter Course
Powerscore LGB/LRB
Cambridge Drill By Type Packets
LSATs 1-76 (Probably going to save a few of the recent in case I need to retake)

I've sort of decided to start fresh and re-learn the fundamentals 100%. Last time around, when I had planned to take in September, I rushed through the Bibles and the Trainer. In hindsight I think it hurt me pretty bad. I rushed to get to drilling and practice testing without fully mastering the strategies needed for each question type. So this time I am going through the 7Sage curriculum while simultaneously using The LSAT Trainer + 12 Week Study Schedule. Then I am going to re-read through the Bibles, do a round of drilling. (Should take about 2 weeks) Then read the Manhattan books and do a second round of drilling to really hone in on weaknesses.

After this, I am going to be doing full-timed PTs w/ BR a couple times a week as well as drilling timed sections. I think last time around I neglected mixed review and focused too much on single Q types. I'd like to be at this step by October.

My goal is a 172. My diagnostic was a ~151. I missed about 9-10 questions on every section, give or take. A lot of that was due to timing issues. The good news is since that test my logic games are down to -6 consistently with some being better and some being worse. I haven't learned grouping games correctly, so usually my missed points are with grouping/assignment games. I try to drill 4 games a day and will continue to do that while I go through the 7Sage curriculum. I'm hoping by the time I'm done with it, I can be down to -2 or better.
Welcome aboard! :)

7Sage, Manhattan Prep, PowerScore LGB and LRB, Offical LSAT SuperPrep, The LSAT Trainer, and PTs 1-77 and hopefully 78 soon.
I think I'm pretty okay with logic games, but logical reasoning is still a hassle.
I'm reviewing the third PrepTest at the moment and having many "D'OH!" moments.
Certainly feel more confident, but would try to reinforce it a lot more once I start fresh with the Trainer. I'm also going with the 12-week schedule.
After I'm more comfortable, reading comprehension time. I keep hoping it's not as bad as it seems, but I don't even know anymore.

Goal: 170+ and NYU/Columbia.

:D Hey Daredevil! Looks like we are both September/December Study Group Members, haha. I can't wait until December becomes more active, probably within the next couple months...

Look like we have VERY similar prep materials, and same goals! Excellent! I am feeling very similar with logic games with the caveat being grouping/assignment. I feel very relieved now I have the proper time to devote to getting my score down to -0. I've been studying for 5 weeks and already have a good grasp go LG. My timing could be better; ironically time will allow me to get my time down.

And I feel you on those "D'OH!" moments. And I think that is a good sign. It means that we aren't totally lost and can identify when and where we've misread or misinterpreted a question stem or stimulus. My reading comprehension is pretty awful right now. I am missing about 1-2 per passage and running out of time. Granted, I haven't read much besides for the intro chapter on RC in The LSAT Trainer and skimmed the first chapter of MLSAT RC to make sure I liked it before getting the set, as it was the only MLSAT I was a bit unfamiliar with. I think RC, like everything else, will eventually fall into place. I'm not really sweating RC right now, like you, I want to get my LGs down cold and LR to -2 per section before moving on to RC.

My plan has really been to work to get LG down to -0 consistently. Then if I can get LR down to -2 per section a 170+ will be close in reach and essentially all down to RC. Totally doable with enough time. Which is why I am no longer planning on sitting for September LSAT. I don't think 3-4 months is enough for most people to hit their LSAT potential. At least IMHO.

As far as schools, of course I am aiming for Harvard. I think if I can get between a 168-172 I should have a pretty good shot. Otherwise, I really would enjoy Columbia, NYU, or Cornell. If I am not moving to Cambridge, chances are I will stay in NY. And I've visited NYU/Columbia and they are really awesome campuses!

Haha yeah, it's pretty dead ITT, but some Septemberers and possibly Juners may pour in after the upcoming exam (God forbid lol).

Yes, the plan is LG, LR, then RC.
I know my LG isn't anywhere near perfect yet, but I do well on both accuracy and time, so no worries there in the meantime.
LR, though, needs to be polished ASAP. Not rushing it to get to RC; I quite enjoy LR and reading the variety of stimuli.
Also aiming to get down to -2 or -3, but my best is only -5 thus far, with occasional -7 and -9, and worst ones being -12 and -14.
I've been at it roughly five weeks as well haha. Was on vacation in June, but still read the Bibles. Started prep once I got back from Korea.

More time with LG for less time with LG; I like that.
We'll get there for RC after blowing away the two others! Same goes for our scores.
Wish you the best of luck in getting into Harvard, though I also wouldn't mind us being in the class of 2021 together. :D

Absolutely, +1 to everything you said.

Thank you, I'm really working toward Harvard, but I'm applying to the T6 and Cornell and may very well follow the money if I don't get H. For certain goals I have, I don't think I'd be able to turn down H. But I would love to be in the class of 2021 together, too. We shall see. Columbia/NYU are close second choices for me, especially being that I love NYC!

Awesome! Welcome :) I think you are making a great choice by waiting until you are ready. Congrats on getting your Pharm. D next year...

I've been studying since the end of May and really started putting in 20+ hours a week since the beginning of June. I also work, so it can be hard to fit prep into only a few months when you can't dedicate a lot of the weekdays to prep.

Previous September taker checking in. Got way too busy with a work project where I was working ~70-80 hours a week so I had to push studying back. Hopefully applying later in the cycle doesn't bite me in the ass too bad (I'm a super swinger from an Electrical Engineering UG, so applying earlier in the cycle was definitely something I wanted to do, but I don't want to sacrifice LSAT performance). Starting fresh with the studying and hoping to do 2+ hours a day during the week and going hard on weekends. Good luck everyone and hopefully we all survive together

Checking in! Just took my first cold diagnostic on Sunday (154 under timed conditions, 161 doing blind review). Managed to calculate my raw score wrong the first time around... so good thing that the LSAT doesn't have a math section. That's right, I apparently can't do basic math. But at least I didn't score a 144 like I had originally thought.

I am brand new to LSAT prep and working full time (nice to see that there are others doing this as well). I hope to be ready by December but will push to February if I'm not feeling comfortable. I'll apply next cycle. Right now I've got three books of prep tests (can't remember exactly which tests) and LR bible coming in the mail. I'm going to take a handful more prep-tests in the next 1-2 weeks to really hone in on areas of weakness before ordering more materials/really setting down on a study schedule.

I am very much digging this sudden downpour of new faces. :D

Try not to use too much PrepTests, especially the latest ones; those should be towards the end.
Early ones are good for practice, but as PTs... Not as much since the wording in LR is ridiculous at times.
Furthermore, LG is relatively harder and RC does not have comparative reading like it does nowadays.
Not a decent predictor when compared to, let's say, PT 55.
Definitely read up on materials as soon as you can (LGB is quite nice; same goes for LSAT Trainer).

Pop in any time you have questions or concerns. Best of luck!

Thanks for the tips! I've got some of the free chapters from LSAT Trainer that are my reading material for breaks/lunch at work while I wait for everything else to come in. I should probably just go ahead and buy the book, huh?

I just checked, and I have PTs 29 - 38, and then 52 - 71. So you suggest saving 62 - 71 for closer to the exam, 52 - 61 for PT now until then, and using 29 - 38 for drilling?

Getting the book will be a good investment; just check reviews for hundreds of testimonies. Got mine today, actually!

Yes, 62-71 should be towards the end,
though I recommend shelling out some more on earlier tests and individual PTs 72-77 (and 78 when it's made available later this month).
It wouldn't hurt to get more exams from the past, too, since they're practically $2 each if you purchase the Official LSAT PrepTests.
I have all of the PTs, using the early ones to drill. Probably up to around 35, as ~40 timed tests seems to be the consensus around these parts.

Make sure you don't run out of material;
the LGB have several games and a ReChallenge section to revisit those games,
which I think is invaluable, so you may wish to look into that as well.
Also, it's completely fine to repeat tests or problems; just don't do the same ones that you're likely to remember almost immediately.

Couldn't agree more with Deardevil. Definitely grab a copy of The Trainer! I think I got mine for ~$40 bucks at Barnes and Noble. I can't tell you how much this book has helped me so far. I look at the test completely differently and Kim's approach de-balkanizes the question types and shows how they are similar and build on one another. The Powerscore Logic Games Bible is also really helpful, so be sure to use that. It took me from missing 15 questions on LG on my diagnostic to about 4-6 in a month. I'm now going to be using Manhattan LG and 7Sage, but I can't stress how much LGB gave me a useful foundation for all question types. The good news is I haven't even fully gone through LGB, so it may be that there is a point or two left to squeeze out of it.

Nice! I actually have to order a new copy myself today (Amazon Prime overnight, baby!). Long story...Good news is I had the 2015 edition, so now I'll have a fresh new copy of the 2016!

I read through the LR parts quickly when I first got it last month. Now I am planning on reading through it deliberately and entirely as well as following the 12 Week Study Schedule. Great book--you won't be disappointed.

Good luck starting your prep! Are you using anything else? And are you following a schedule or doing your own thing?

Yes, 62-71 should be towards the end,
though I recommend shelling out some more on earlier tests and individual PTs 72-77 (and 78 when it's made available later this month).
It wouldn't hurt to get more exams from the past, too, since they're practically $2 each if you purchase the Official LSAT PrepTests.
I have all of the PTs, using the early ones to drill. Probably up to around 35, as ~40 timed tests seems to be the consensus around these parts.

Make sure you don't run out of material;
the LGB have several games and a ReChallenge section to revisit those games,
which I think is invaluable, so you may wish to look into that as well.
I just ordered the LSAT Trainer, LG Bible, and individual PTs 73-77 thanks to you both! Love that Amazon Prime; I barely have to wait for these to get here! And my other books (LR Bible, PTs 62-71) are arriving tonight :P

Curious to know, what study schedule are you all using? Since I'm doing self-study (for now), I found the Powerscore free study schedules. I'm really excited about all of the materials I have, just need to figure out how to prioritize them/chapters within them. I figure a cover-to-cover and then pick up the next book strategy is not the best...

No problem!

I am using the LSAT Trainer's 12 week study schedule as my main framework, but have personalized it quite a bit. I'm planning to finish it in 4-6 weeks.

Aside from The Trainer, I am also going through 7Sage's curriculum.

After every chapter/lesson I drill questions from the Cambridge drill by type packets. And 1-2x a week I try to do a full-timed section to get practice with mixed review. I also use the 7Sage system LG system and re-do games until I go -0.

After I'm done with both The LSAT Trainer and 7Sage I am going to begin reading through the Manhattan LSAT trilogy to shore up any weaknesses and fill in any gaps. I'll do another round of drilling after each chapter I read in those books too. I figure around this time I will start taking 1 practice test a week

Following this plan, I am aiming to be on to just full-timed exams w/ BR by early-mid October. Planning on taking 2 per week and putting an immense amount of time into review and attacking any weaknesses.

I should also add that I've read through the LGB and LRB. I might try to re-read some stuff in each this week though, because the first time I rushed through and don't know if I did so at the expense of skipping important info.

Like Barack, I am going with the 12-week schedule simply because it looks like it makes the most sense.
However, I am going through the Trainer quicker than suggested, and you can also adjust whenever you feel like it.

I have read the Bibles (one after another) beforehand, but feel that the Trainer is, imo, much more user-friendly,
and it has the bonus of delivering all three sections at once so that you are building and retaining skills for everything.
I used to argue that juggling too much isn't recommended, but after some time not doing a certain section,
I felt rusty (luckily, it's just LG, so it's not too much rust), so by putting off work in one area, you might forget it easier.
So if you read a Bible, don't read all the way through before starting another; use them in conjunction.
It may seem like a lot to handle, but the Trainer will train you correctly, and taking notes is always a good idea.

Might just have to take it in Dec rather than Sept

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
