Just starting flawed methods of reasoning questions. I'm not sure why it is so late in the curriculum, but it does seem to foster a better understanding of the test to focus on these.

Checking in after not being on this thread for a few weeks.

Did 10 RC passages today so far and GOT -2 ON EVERY SINGLE ONE. I may be cursed. And almost every wrong answer I checked results in an "Ohhh DUUUHHH" moment. Guess I gotta hone in and focus more. And it doesn't help any that my Uni's library is under construction and all I've heard was intense drilling for 30 seconds on every 5 minutes. Any who...

Good luck fools hope the studying is coming along well

What are you using? The LSAT Trainer puts these right at the beginning.

My guess is TestMasters, I'm currently in it and we dont get exposed to these until after LESSON 9 (about a month or more into the course) Im sure there is a method to their madness

If I do 2 PTs a week now until September 24th, I'll have done just a few under all of the PTs from 51-77. So, I'm going to have to do 3 PTs a week on occasion and/or cut into some of them for drilling purposes. We'll see.

Yep - Testmasters. I mean - you do get exposed in a way. Given how little my instructor deviates from the online lectures, I think they have certain points that they try to hit. Throughout your course, I'm sure that you'll hear your teacher reference...

Nessy (You burn the photos...so what...that doesn't disprove the conclusion...just that it has crappy support)

Lifting bricks (You can lift a brick but you can't lift a house)

etc.

It's... 2PM? Don't sweat it too much. Just apologize and emphasize that you do really need to meet with them and want to reschedule but that you will also keep yourself flexible in case they have an opening (i.e. it reads like you're willing to bend over for them to meet with you due to your mistake...they'll just set a time... they aren't going to actually keep you on call, but, if you make it sounds like you're willing to be on call and your professor takes you up on that, they're being a bit of a prick.)

Do these analogies actually come into use when you're testing? It seems a little too convoluted to use these when you only have ~ 1 minute a question.

This is good advice. Try to apologize face-to-face if you can afford to, instead of shooting them an e-mail or phone call.

They may, and, personally, they seem like they may for me. I am doing 4F questions, and I literally jotted Nessy next to two questions in a row that committed flaws regarding attacking evidence (mainly because nessy is good shorthand for that in my mind). Granted, that is because it is a way I am adding another layer of quizzing to the homework... (i.e. on the strengthen homework, I wrote down whether every question was a 2, 2N, or 2S and I actually checked those against the answer key... this one I definitely recommend...it's something that you can check for literally every question.) Also, if I get something wrong, it is easier for me to explain to academic support what I thought was wrong. You should submit any question you got wrong, spent a lot of time on, or weren't 100% confident in IMO. If I get a question right but I was between A&D and I just sort of went with my gut, I try to explain what my gut feeling was to see if it was correct/justified.

I think the primary point of them is to put abstract ideas into easy and parsable thoughts so that you understand what is going on with the flaws and sort of have a fall back of what those flaws are like. What's easier to picture in regards to flaws with evidence...

Person 1: Nessy exists - here are my photos! Person 2: Those are fake! Nessy doesn't exist!

or...

'treats a failure to prove a claim as constituting proof the denial of that claim' and 'use the lack of evidence contradicting a claim as conclusive evidence for that claim'

If you can recognize something as similar to Nessy, you know that it has something to deal with refutation based on a lack of evidence.1

In regards to bricks, I actually think it is helpful for one question that I just did in particular. Keep in mind that there are two flaws using the brick example...

I can pick up this brick, therefore I can pick up this house made of bricks.

(part to whole or assuming that a characteristic that a member possesses (or even every member!) belongs to the overall group)

All of these bricks make a house, therefore this brick is a house.

(whole to part or ascribing a quality that a group has and assigning it to an individual member of that group)

I point this out, as one question just had "presumes, without providing justification, that what is true of a whole must also be true of each of its constituent parts" and "draws a conclusion about all cases of a certain kind on the basis of evidence that justifies such a conclusion only about some cases of that kind" as answer choices for one question. I think having a simple way to compare and contrast part to whole vs whole to part made the question a lot quicker and easier. If I didn't have it, maybe I'd burn a little more time because I'd be a little less confident in picking one over the other as they are quite similar in nature.

The meeting was at 10am. I was moving until 3am because I planned poorly, and just completely blanked. I apologized, and we're rescheduling. The professor and I have known each other for years, so I'm hoping this won't counteract all of that. But yeah, completely fell asleep at the wheel.
Yeah - it definitely won't. Don't sweat it. Professors are generally fairly empathetic individuals, especially if they are the ones that actually bond with a student over the course of several years. No reasonable person is going to change their opinion of you based on one incident that isn't representative of their overall perception of you.

Just finished my last 8 passages using the Memory Method Phase I:

Ok, so I did 4 legal and got -0 on EVERY SINGLE PASSAGE!!! I'm truly in shock, I was expecting to get -1 on the South Africa moving from a rights based system to a constitutional system and the legal reformers analyzing the narrative and the law passage I expected at least a -3 or -4. Wow, I am truly in shock right now.

I had a section of an earlier PT printed out but when I looked over the passages, I had seen some of them before so I decided to do the RC from PT 41 as my last 4 instead. I went:
P1: -1
P2: -0
P3: -1
P4: -1

P4 was the Victorian philanthropy passage, it was a stupid mistake. I picked evaluations instead of subject to the same criticism, when in an earlier answer choice I picked both criticisms were suggest that X. Argh, so stupid! P1 I was deciding between two answer choices (it's the one on course packs) I went with the wrong answer choice but while deciding I was leaning towards the correct one, I said no your wrong the other one must be right. The third passage that merits my wrong answer was the one on technology and renewable energy with India and Brazil as examples. I'm going to thoroughly review that passage and also review any question I was iffy on. Still really happy. I think next time I hit RC, I'll be ready for Phase II!! :D

Also, apparently it's National Ice Cream month so I think I'm going to go to Whole Foods and pick a pint of Gelato (their pints are small) to celebrate my mini success. Gelato still counts right? 8) :P

Feeling really disheartened and as if I'm progressively getting worse at LR. Did the first LR section of PT 48 today in 32 mins and went -10. Like wtf man, this is bullshit. How do I go from going -3 on a section, to -6 to -10. This is so frustrating I swear I hate this shit.

honestly you might be like me and tend to do worse on older LR sections. I'd wait to see if this is the case after you take your PT this week (I think you said you were IIRC), assuming you're taking a more recent one (52+)

Idk if it's because I'm worse at older LR since the majority of my LR drilling/knowledge is from PT 21-40. But I'm hoping that this was just a fluke, idk man that shit just pissed me off because I was only ehh on 2 questions and then that happened, like wtf lol.

Yeah I'm taking PT 60 or 61 on Friday.
