you know, a law school could really draw a robust applicant pool by offering drink stipends to promising applicants. It's like a scholarship, but they pay for your drinks while in school

Re: The Official June 2015 Waiter's Thread
yeah i have a friend who just graduated nyu law. He saved a little up beforehand but that's why so many of them go to big law. i think more of them would go to other career paths but that debt is ridic and they are pretty comparably stingy with merit aid. When people look at the numbers for cornell and see the lower big law jobs its not bc they can't get it but they typically rather not. And cornell gives out money more readily than NYU.

The top schools do this in the form of frequent banquets and luncheons.
Law Firms too.

Absolutely you will. It'd be more expensive to live in a cardboard box in an alley in NYC than it would be to live in cvilleSeamus887 wrote:So when looking at, lets say NYU vs UVA, even if NYU matches scholarships from UVA I will be way more in debt at NYU? Re: The Official June 2015 Waiter's Thread
Im in the same boat. Im looking at GULC and GW. It is a lot easier (in the financial sense) because I make 60k a year and dont have to worry about anything other than tuition. With the GI bill and the money that these schools give out, it isnt unimagineable that you could get out of there with no debt. The only issue that I see with this is if you get orders during your first couple of years. The AF only lets you defer assignement for 12 months. I don't have retainability to go overseas (the only other possible assignment for me) so all I have to worry about is getting orders, declining them, and then getting shown the door at the end of my enlistment (hopefully not, cuz I wanna go JAG). Not sure what your situation is like but just make sure that you don't have the potential to get orders. Once that money is spent you are never getting it back.AF_Falcon wrote:I was going to wait until my Air Force commitment was up before applying to law school because I really wanted to go to NYU or Columbia (probably can't get in with my GPA though.) After calculating how much I could realistically save over the next 3 years, however, I realized it made far more sense for me to apply to GULC part time since I will be stationed in D.C. for the next 3-5 years (if I decide to extend). That way my cost of living is at least covered and I can realistically afford $13,000 out of pocket tuition my first year and $20,000 after that.

ETA: IIRC
Hmmm, well if you get in T16 you don't really need to stress top percentage to get big law... only for lower tier that applies and judging by your posts you seem like you are striving for those schools. Top percentage in law school are those gunning for SCOTUS clerk or campaign positions....

Re: The Official June 2015 Waiter's Thread
Also it's worth noting when comparing other towns to NYC the kind of commute you'd be expecting in both. For example, we're talking about neighborhoods to live in in NYC, all of which are expensive, some of which will take you 40 minutes to get to classes. When you look at COL in other places (like charlottesville), it's cheaper, and you're right there. However, cville is still the most expensive town in Virginia. Imagine if you'd be willing to budget for a similar commute to UVA as you would to NYU or Columbia. If you deemed 40 minutes an appropriate amount of time to get to class, you could live in a dirt cheap neighboring town and pay almost nothing. We put up with a long commute when considering NYC because it's almost a necessity if you want to have enough options, but applying it to other schools can really change your COL
