Dirigo wrote:Yale, Stanford, and Berkeley are known to be black boxes. That means that even people with better numbers are rejected in favor of people with worse numbers. Those schools are holistic and carry a lot about "softs."

Softs can include, but are not limited to:
Veteran status.
Diversity (URM, or other kinds of diversityFABULOUS)
TFA, Peace Corps, Fulbright, etc.
Work Experience
Whether or not you're an eggplant enthusiast
Etc.
Just a reminder, holistic means there can't be no holes in your application.

I'm so glad LS admission is 90% numbers. All of the other crap people do to "get in" is hilarious and irrelevant.

thanks but I have strong numbers and won't attend unless 175+ LSAT (already scoring in the 168-172 range). I want to leave no doubt that I am just as capable and am not an Affirmative-Action poster kid.

I dont think its the ONLY reason. I mean at the end of the day its still decent work experience.
True, though there's probably a huge trade-off in time + possibility it ends up being brutal. One of my friends, who's one of the nicest, never-upset-about-anything (literally, you could cheese him a dozen times in StarCraft and he would still be smiling) guys, got super depressed anytime anyone mentioned his TFA work. After a little over a year into his stint, he just packed his stuff and went to Cali to make an abrupt switch to do a comp sci program (completely blew our minds, since he was 100% poli sci, never did that stuff in undergrad)...

No idea how representative his experience was, but his face whenever anyone mentioned TFA still terrifies me...
