1900: High-stakes Baccarat game at Monte Carlo with head of European finance ministry. After beating him, he agrees to relax certain disclosure requirements for IPOs. Also he pays for champagne (in broken English) and you party with Russian model and African chief's daughter.

2300: Returning to hotel, concierge informs you of a call. Picking up, you hear "Mr. Corporate Lawyer, this is our fifth call. You've missed the last three payments on your student loans. If you'd like to discuss repayment options, you can contact me at 1-800-FANTASY."

You wake up in a cold sweat, and realize you have less than 20 minutes to get dressed, shower, and get to your document review job in a warehouse in New Jersey. Think about going back to law school for the "International Law LLM."

lol I read that a couple months ago in a thread and thought it was hilarious. I was just trolling if it wasn't obvious.

What kind of housing do they expect your living expenses to encompass if you're at NYU or Columbia?

the official budget at georgetown doesn't even cover the full cost of the on campus housing they fing provide

So I can't out borrow that?

I'd be willing to take out loans in the maximum amount if it meant I could live comfortably.

Living in New York probably offsets the costs because you don't have to have a car. No gas no insurance and maintainance cost, no car payments.

I won't care if my place is small because I'll be out about experiencing the city and making social connections or else held up in the law library.

My car insurance is like $2000 per year. Rent in NYC is maybe $2000 a month on the low end? Gas is also really cheap now. I don't see where the costs are offset, but I also don't have any car payments.

Gas adds up mayne. It's comparatively less but it's still a decent chunk. And for 2,000 a month you are getting a decent two bedroom which means split costs.

but really I'd love to go to NYU but I don't know if I can justify living in the world's most expensive city while I undertake a very expensive degree

I agree. I was looking at NYU / Columbia, but am really concerned by the COL. I'm hoping to get a solid scholarship somewhere, but at best its likely to be just tuition, and I don't want to rack up too much unnecessary debt. As much as I like NYC everything there from your cup of coffee to rent is more expensive.

doesn't help that I want to get a clerkship afterwards so I won't be paying anything back for a while
