First, there is an absolutely cavernous middle ground you're overlooking. Second, im not sure why you think that you shouldn't go to law school unless you want to be a 60hpw paper pusher.basedvulpes wrote:I'm fine with anyone going into school aiming for public interest or government or whatever. My only point here is that if you're not going to be happy unless you have 12 degrees and are a federal judge who litigates whale-personhood cases on the side, and conversely won't be happy pushing paper for corporate overlords for 60 hours a week, then you probably shouldn't become a lawyer and hence go to law school. Unless you're super duper confident that you're the special snowflake unicorn that everyone has always told you that you are, in which case you'll totally carve that niche, dude!

First off the program is very convoluted and the loopholes which would cause you to be disqualified are numerous, you can't even get married if the combined income would end up exceeding your allotted income amount. It's also frequently revised and there's been lots of speculation about it possibly being removed entirely by the legislators.
Also inheritance can greatly fuck with it too. And you're still expected to be making minimum payments otherwise your credit will go straight down the pooper.
And since you're borrowing from the government they will collect no matter what happens if you don't get it forgiven.
Borrowing from the US Gov. is way stricter when it comes to avoidance or bankruptcy than private corps, that why they are able to be so flexible with the low interest rates and delayed payments than private companies because they have the power to garnish your wages and liquidate assets.
And some of the nicer positions in the public sector will almost force promote you to make above the 60,000.
Don't go into debt if you're not gonna be able to pay it off in 10 years and still live comfortably. 10 years is a long long long long long long period of your life, and you've already been putting off making a decent wage all through school.

I'm that weird one that wants to be the 60hr a week paper pusher, mostly because couple that with charming and schmoozing my way up the corporate ladder I'm willing to take as much shit as possible and work over every holiday to get to that corner office at the top of those ivory towers.yellowyak46 wrote: First, there is an absolutely cavernous middle ground you're overlooking. Sorry, your phrasing just made me giggle.
Sounds like you otherwise had a very solid point.

Yeah, this^^^.buckiguy_sucks wrote:LOL at 45k after taxes too. Try like 35k before taxes in a city with massive COL costs
If you're going public interest your number 1 priority should be limiting debt and also having a realistic career plan because a lot of that shit doesn't exist. Even with LRAP (which isn't a guaruntee to still exist ) IBR/PAYE/PSLF (which aren't guaranteed to still exist) you're still paying some of your tiny after tax income to your student loan payments to find out you actually hate being a nonprofit paper pusher and are miserable, or you find out your student loan debt fucks with your significant others career plan or other endless possibilities
Tl:dr and less blunt: be realistic and limit debt for PI
I can't imagine even thinking about going into the public sector unless I had everything already payed off.

Re: The Official June 2015 Waiter's Thread
All this cynicism is depressing. I'll take my career advice from lawyers I know who are currently doing things I want to do over people who haven't gone to law school yet any day. Thanks for the vote of confidence, and please carry on with your plans.benwyatt wrote:BIG-Sucks, this is why lurkers hate you.buckiguy_sucks wrote:yellowyak46 wrote:

buckiguy_sucks wrote:Also lol at 60/hr workweeks more like 80 for big lawl
An 80hr work week is just as uncommon as a 40hr one is.
It happens but only in the case of major major major litigation going on and very sporadically.
The partners know not to kill off their company's future right out of the gate.
One of the benefits of big law is you get the experience of working 5 years in 2 and a half(with a salary you would have made in that amount of time as well if not more).
