one can dream :pmist4bison wrote:Eh, it's not really what you make it. Most people end up going into corporate even if they plan on doing something else. If you go into biglaw, it's a big pile of shit the first few years. Hell, there's a second year at my firm who does the same shit I do and I'm a paralegal. Yesterday he called to ask me for help on a complaint he was writing. Don't get me wrong, I'm super excited to be a piece of shit on a partner's shoe for the first few years, but I think a lot of people go into it thinking "I'm going to argue in court every week!" and "I'm gonna change the world!" And maybe they will (just not for a long time), but most likely they'll sit at a desk and do other people's shit work.dreamerchic19 wrote:I think it's what you make it, people are doing so many unconventional things with law degrees nowsurf wrote:just ask any lawyer. chances are they'll tell you to run. fast.Dirigo wrote: Being a lawyer really isn't that exciting. Sorry for being so cynical...but I'm sure the majority of people on TLS know this to be true, so I won't feel so bad.

No, no, no, no.dreamerchic19 wrote:I think it's what you make it, people are doing so many unconventional things with law degrees nowsurf wrote:just ask any lawyer. chances are they'll tell you to run. fast.Dirigo wrote: Being a lawyer really isn't that exciting. People do unconventional things despite law degrees, not because of them. The universe of non-legal jobs that seek out a JD is extremely small. In most cases, a JD will be an obstacle you need to overcome. There is a suspicion that you really want to be a lawyer and will leave when you have the opportunity, or that you washed out as a lawyer and are damaged goods. And if you do overcome these hurdles, you are generally going to still start at the bottom rung.
Law school will not prepare you for an actual job. It barely gives you any practical skills for a legal job. It is largely a hurdle you need to overcome in order to take the bar (your bar prep course will teach you everything you need to pass in 6 weeks). The first six months of your first legal job will be when you start actually figuring out what lawyers do.
If don't want to practice in a big firm, limit your debt. If you do want to practice in a big firm, go to a top school (but still limit debt). If you don't want to practice law, don't go to law school.

If you've taken it twice already, I think self-study is in order at least for starters. I'll be taking for 3rd time in December... when re-studying for September, I just put myself in a cafe/library and dove in to 7sage videos. Little commitment, JY always has jokes. They got me warmed up and I was back in it in no time. There is no way I can study in my apt, that's just me.
Not as detailed as 7sage LG but the LR is pretty good and the RC is great.

That's a lofty goal but I feel ya. I think if I upped my calls I could make a big jump in DL clean and squat, but don't want to put on too much weightnlee10 wrote: to gain 10 or 15 more pounds. Hoping two smolov jr cycles back to back can add like 50 to 75 pounds to my squat. haha

Tbf if they see a JD and your not practicing law it raises questions. That wasn't a retort to dirigo but to the boomers above

what's a lawyer?Dirigo wrote:Yes. "You can do anything with a law degree!" is such adirigo's dadboomer thing to say and such a horribly misleading assurance said way too often.
Go to law school if you want to be a lawyer.
Any other aspiration isn't worth the time wasted, the debt, and the embarrassment.
