RC has been really shaky for me and i feel really dissapointed right now.
i would love some suggestions about how to approach RC. i don't know, i feel like i'm doing something wrong
I have adopted the Trainer and used it to adjust my natural reading approach where I would focus primarily on understanding the material (this sometimes would work like a charm and at other times would end disastrously). I am inclined to try to understand how everything in the passage is used and this approach is awful when I encounter convoluted material (ocean mapping) or when there is heavy emphasis on detail. The Trainer says to put details to the background and simply try to find the main ideas and just identify the parts that affect them. In other words, it's encouraging you to read to get a very simple understanding but expect to and be comfortable with going back to the passage to dig up details. I found this strategy worked greatly for me because it asked me to do a lot less than what I was trying and failing to do with my read.
Also, inference questions on RC are very detailed base as well in that unless something was mentioned or expressly alluded to in the passage itself, it is highly unlikely to be a correct inference. The !Kung passage on PT67 had many inference questions of this nature. All were "wtf" questions with crappy choices but the right answers were consistently the ones which were mentioned in one way or another in the passage. Basically, to use the Trainer know that you'll have to go back to the passage and probably constantly too unless you have super recall.
