Is Agents of SHIELD any good? I've heard disappointing reviews from friends so I'm thinking of skipping it in my tv binge.

it's gotten much better last few eps. good character development!

so happy this thread is full of nerds! love firefly, haven't seen serenity, but see it is on netflix - trying to hold off until apps are done. dr. horrible's sing a long blog is one of the most hilarious things i've ever seen.
right now i'm really looking forward to more bee and puppycat and bravest warriors. they're so short they don't count as distractions, that's my rationale.

OK so I love (love) basically everything Joss I have ever seen. But I've never seen Buffy or Angel, in large part because I missed the train of watching it as a kid, and now I'm a grown-ass man and it feels like watching Buffy or Angel is absurd. But I do like to ask the question: is it as good as the rest of his stuff?

buffy: it depends on your stomach for camp. it is, unavoidably, a show about teenagers (at least for the first few seasons), with low production value and bad special effects... but great writing (okay, most of the time), great humor, and decent acting. the musical episode was the one and only musical episode ever in the history of tv that was worth watching. it's also a bit of a classic, which is why i watched it in the first place (i missed the train as a kid too, didn't watch it till i was like a senior in ug).

angel, on the other hand, is (controversial opinion) better than buffy and more enjoyable if you dont have the sentimentality a lot of people have for buffy. it's darker, more adult, and deals with issues that buffy cant. i liked it quite a lot.

if you enjoy whedons work, i'd give them both a try (they're on netflix), but if i had to watch just one, i'd choose angel. added bonus: you dont really need to watch buffy to understand whats going on.

Pretty much everything here. If you skip Buffy (I'm one of the sentimental people who watched it as a kid) I'd say watch once more with feeling (musical episode). It's the best and doesn't require a whole lot of context. Hush is also amazing. But Angel for sure you need to watch, and I'm pretty sure the first season gives more than enough back story.

I'm a big fan of campy shows so after watching Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, I knew I had to check this guy out and the more I hear about him, the more I feel this has to happen soon.

Sounds like you and I had similar undergrad experiences except I spent a lot of my time checking out shows as they came out and then subsequently dropping most of them as I lost interest or the networks decided to cancel them (R.I.P. Terriers, Ben & Kate, and Happy Endings, you left us too soon).
