Apps are like all done with the exception of "why x" essays.

Do people have real great reasons for wanting to go to a certain school (asking related to "why x" essays)? I'm not asking for you to list them if anyone thinks I am trying to steal their ideas lol, just wondering.

I feel semi disingenuous writing them, but it's not like I don't want to go "x" school if accepted. FWIW I'm not lying like "THIS IS MY #1" and other stuff, but do people just find programs that they like and write about it?

Why X essays are the bane of my existence for this reason. I write about generic programs and whatnot, but I also try to find at least one unique thing I might be able to include to make it sound more ingenuous. A tip: try asking a current student at the school (maybe even in the "Ask a Law Student" subforum).

For peeps who finished apps already, how many hours did you log start to finish?

Many, many more hours than I expected. I was naive and thought I only had to work on my PS/DS/resume. didn't realize how many "optional" essays there were to do.

oh and try to connect it to something else in your app. saying "I'm interested in x program because I want to continue my work with (something you talked about in your PS)" is better than just listing a random one.

the worst is when schools include it in the app. like I know "Why X" is recommended for UVA, but I didn't see it in the app so I decided to play dumb and not write one. but cornell doesn't give me that option. >>

Muzzy: If you really want a solution to it then I would suggest printing the finished app pdf out and really meticulously going through it once and then again later. After you're sure theres nothing there just put a huge DON'T CHECK FOR SPELLING/GRAMMAR AGAIN.

But honestly, what kinda sucks is that thinking you're all done, but then you realize you have to add one more thing or change one more thing ESPECIALLY on one of those common parts of the app that a lot of apps share, which then doesn't update every other application (UNLESS IT DOES AND IT JUST DIDN'T DO IT FOR ME IN WHICH CASE I WOULD BE SO MAD...) so you gotta go through every other app to make the changes. This then reverts back to the cycle of omg did I mess something up on the changes that I have to check over it again?

For T14 schools, are optional essays pretty standard? Obviously haven't gotten December score but even with my October one I think I could hack a few of the lower ones so I'm trying to limit the amount of application work I do.

Depends on your numbers. If you're an obvious admit with your stats, then you probably don't need to worry about the optional essays (except Why X essays to avoid YP). but if you're a splitter, a reverse splitter, or close to median, I'd probably do the optional essays for schools that "welcome" them.

The definition of splitter is falling below a 25th percentile and exceeding a median (e.g. 3.5/171 or for reverse 3.95/164). Super splitters are (really) sub-25th and supra-75th (e.g. 3.0/177)

I still can't believe they are counting my high school credits I dropped from my degree transcript... I begged the registrar to change the grade to an AU but I haven't gotten a response. Maybe I'll go in and turn on the water works, nobody wants to see a grown man cry.

I think this came out a few weeks after week took the LSAT. I remember it popping up close to when scores came out in october. I'm sure it won't be pretty for law schools, good for us though. I wish they disclosed how many people were retaking a second or third time to make those numbers mean a little more.

It can't hurt... are you listing in on your resume? I wasn't sure where to put I was writing one.
