Re: The Official June 2015 Study Group
I definitely don't go to an elite undergrad. If the poll options seem to skew towards "best" or "most prestigious" or whatever, it's because 1) I expect that those options best describe many of the TLS strivers here, and 2) divisions become less important as you move down the scale, e.g., going from 3.8 to 3.9 might get you over a median or 75th, but someone with a 2.9 is basically in the same place as a someone with a 2.7 or 2.5, so there's little need to differentiate them.
And as I said above, I don't think thing UG prestige tells you much about the individual. Going to a top UG probably tells you more about the parents than the student.
You'll also notice that when I record poll results I open the thread in a different browser so you can't see my vote marked. If I wanted to brag, I wouldn't do that.
So please don't accuse me of being a UG elitist.
Finally, I think college major will be our next poll. That could be interesting.

Sure, I meant my previous post more as an aside from the current discussion.schmelling wrote:There's plenty of quality american schools, but most students are going for rather irresponsible majors.msp8 wrote:As an outsider, I find the whole American college system pretty interesting. There's such a massive cultural difference between US & Canadian (and any other country's, really) college system. I used to think it all balanced out in the end, the various benefits and drawbacks of each system, but I'm beginning to think Canadians take education for granted far too much.
Just in terms of prestige of universities (more important in the US than in Canada); class sizes (not uncommon to have 600 students in some undergrad classes in Canada; to my knowledge, that's exceedingly rare in the US); tuition ($1500 / semester in parts of Canada).
The whole question about quality of education balanced with the accessibility of it; Canada makes it highly accessible, but there are drawbacks to having that accessibility -- even outside of massive class sizes, there are a whole slew of unmotivated students who take their education for granted because of that accessibility. End result, off the top of my head, is that some ~55% of students in Quebec enrolled in an undergrad program don't complete their degree. And out of the ones that do, it takes them ~6 years for what ought to be a 3 year degree.

Have no freaking idea where my UG was ranked so I guessed. Wonder if I gave them a prestige bump?

Not doing the poll but I looked up my undergrad and it isn't even ranked in relation to all US schools, it's only ranked among regional schools in the West. Lol.
I didn't even look into rankings at all when deciding where to go to undergrad but I knew from word of mouth it was the third or fourth best public university in my state. I liked the look of the education system and I liked the distance between myself and my parents. It was close enough that my parents could easily transport me back and forth if need be but far enough away that I could have some space and privacy. Also I liked that it had public state school prices while having small class sizes. My undergrad had a rule that there would never be more than 25 students per professor teaching a class. So a class with two professors never had more than 50 students in it. The idea of having one professor and 300 students in a class seems ridiculous to me. I liked interacting with my professors not TAs.

With as little as rankings matter for law school, they matter even less for UG!EvergreenStateLady wrote:Not doing the poll but I looked up my undergrad and it isn't even ranked in relation to all US schools, it's only ranked among regional schools in the West. Lol.

Nope. Northeast here. At least your snow will melt soon whereas ours will linger until April.NonTradLawHopeful wrote:Anyone else in the middle of the southeast's snowmaggedon?

Is anyone using the Powerscore workbooks for drilling, or do you prefer the Cambridge packets? I'm very much leaning towards the Cambridge packets, since I'd have access to them instantly and can print 'em whenever (and however many) I need to.
