Anyone else bothered that the black ticons have yellow stripes on the metal part?
Did ~200 pages out of Manhattan LR today (skipping the end-of-chapter questions). I should probably be working on LG, but I'm just not feeling it.

Doesn't bother me. Before I was looking to find an answer to why the black ticons are superior to the normal ones and I couldn't find an answer other than "they are just better". So anyone have an answer?RZ5646 wrote:Anyone else bothered that the black ticons have yellow stripes on the metal part?
Maybe a question for Shaq - since I know you prefer them?

Just joined TLS. Started studying for the LSAT last week..
the whole time ahaha
Planning on taking the test in October 2015 but could not find a study group for it so can someone link me if there is one? If not, I'll just troll around this thread for a while

don't have one. this may be going against the wisdom of the majority but i didn't take a diag. and just straight delved into LGB (and RCB which i've been reading when my brain starts melting from the LG). i guess i'm not interested in where i am currently (its probably depressing...) as much as just wanting to improve as much as possible. my intention is to get through all the bibles then take my first timed PT
so, for numbers, all i really have is the 6 LGs at the end of chapter 2 of LGB.
the first time i took it, cold, I got -8 out of 37 questions, avg about 15 min per game.
after reviewing, i was able to get -0 with an avg about 5 min 30 sec per game although that was only possible since i retook them and reviewed them a couple times (score was from my 5th retake lol) so it probably doesn't really count

Diagnostics aren't really necessary. They're simply just a benchmark to look back at and laugh about.

Re: The Official June 2015 Study Group
yeah, i think, just knowing myself, i would unnecessarily psych myself out with a score that will only go up (i mean... that's the point of studying, right?) anyways. i didn't want to burn a PT to find out that i have a lot to learn because i know that alreadyDirigo wrote:Diagnostics aren't really necessary. so the goal is to just go through LGB, identifying weaknesses and trying to drill them out by repeating the games they have at the end of the chapter.. then do that for LR and RC (RC seems to be my best section, naturally, but "best" is relative here...) and when i'm done with the bibles, PT over and over again, analyzing what I got wrong and why over and over again.
seems to be the best way to self study, i think. might pick up some other books that TLS seems to recommend

Re: The Official June 2015 Study Group
I've identified a psychological issue that is hampering my LSAT prep: there is no winning. If I do well, I am at best merely content with my performance, while if I struggle I feel very bad about it. It's like back when you were a kid and you gave your parents your report card and all they said was, "Hey, how did you fuck up here? It says 99% instead of a 100%." I need to somehow reframe the test so that I feel good about doing well, because this attitude not only deprives me of a source of motivation that probably helps some people (i.e., the feeling of accomplishment), but is even demotivating, as I'm only striving to avoid the negative consequences of failure, and the best way to do that is to not practice at all.
Anyone else have this problem? If so, how did you deal with it? I'm thinking about rewarding myself somehow every time I beat a PR, but I know intrinsic motivation is more effective.

hey man. so i struggled with this a lot too, not with LSAT but while an undergrad. for me, the issue was being motivated by fear vs being motivated through optimism.RZ5646 wrote:I've identified a psychological issue that is hampering my LSAT prep: there is no winning. i think, in a way, it really depends on the person. i know some people who just have sheer joy when they study. one guy i really looked up to in high school went to CMC in CA and finished with a 4.0, got a 178 on his LSAT, and got into HLS. whenever i saw him study.. he was just happy.. happy to learn new stuff. yeah, people say "you gotta think this certain way, blah blah blah" but to that degree? i don't think you can just will yourself to have that kind of rewarding mindset.
i think i'm naturally a lot more like you. its not so much the joy of learning something new but the fear of not learning something that will then have huge consequences on my life that really pushes me to sit that extra hour, turn that additional page, etc.
like you mentioned, this can be a problem.. i sincerely believe that the people with the love-to-learn mindset can keep chugging, especially when they're faced with bad scores. i find that kind of result.. crippling somewhat.
i don't know if this will work for you but i sort of got out of it by finding a motivation to keep going even when it brings me down. more concretely, i have a friend from high school who is at berkeley right now and she will be studying for the LSAT with me this summer. so i have 3 months of self studying before i link up with her. my mentality is this: if i don't master this now, i won't be able to teach it to her later. whether i actually end up helping her or her helping me is inconsequential. rather, it is this responsibility that i feel to keep trying to master the material that helps my motivation overcome the negativity i naturally feel when i don't do as well as i hoped..
learning as a "teacher" (i.e. pretending i have to lecture on the material that i am currently studying) has really helped me in a lot of ways. its helped me try to prioritize the information i'm reading, to verbalize my thinking process (which helps catch mistaken thought processes and forces me to justify everything i'm doing, hammering in the concepts), and puts this additional "responsibility" on me to help motivate me further.
maybe linking up with a study buddy or anyone really (i even "tutored" my dad on the basics of LG.. and it somewhat helped) can help you overcome that negativity. just a thought. i haven't studied all that long--i started last friday--but it seems to work for me.
best of luck!
