40 years old for a big law job possible?
Hey, everybody:
I'm from a Chinese diplomat family, my parents working at UN. So I studied in NYC intermittently, I mean, from 1st to 5th, 7th to 12th grades. I finished my bachelor degree at a reputable Chinese university, majored in Journalism and worked as a Chinese diplomat for cultural affairs for 13 years. I worked in the US for 6 years, 04-08 New York; 13-15, New York; Cananda for 4 years, 09-13.
My UGPA is evaluated as 3.84/4.00, Superior, Renmin University of China
My LSAT is 162--I know it's a horrible score so I'll retake next June and hopefully will get it over 170. I was too nervous and missed lots of constraints at the games section. I barely made more than two mistakes in that section during practices.
With this said, I'll be 36 next year, so when I graduate, I'll be 40. Is there still any chances for me to get a job from a biglaw? Or I'll just toasted? If so, I might not apply for a law school. My parents will pay my tuition but I don't want to end up without paying even not a coin back to them. Besides, I need H1B/EB2 to work in the US with a regular passport, rather than diplomatic passport. That's a big consideration, too. Big laws might be advantageous for this concern.
Lots of big big thanks in advance

I'm not sure about the age, but I'm sure you know speaking Mandarin/Cantonese will be extremely advantageous to finding a job. There have been cases where students graduated in the lower percentile of their class and got a job just because they spoke Mandarin/Cantonese.

Here is one anecdote. I will be 34 when I graduate this year and landed biglaw. I was in a pretty large summer class, and I was the third oldest person. I think my two elders were one and three years older than me. There were probably 5 others over 30.

With your experience and from a good school I don't think you will have any trouble.

Definitely possible, just a question of whether you'll want to put up with it.

I simply don't understand why you are interested in biglaw with your connections--you have a lot more opportunities, to make more money, have more power, and with more freedom than to work as an associate in biglaw, unless you are simply there for the experience of a few years of corporate life. Just know that, you most likely won't be able to work in biglaw forever. In terms of job placement, it is really easy for you to bring deals and clients to a law firm, so yes, they will hire you. (I worked closely with the central gov in beijing on several deals between china and the us. The connections you have in China always trump the name of of a US law firm in landing a deal).
