Addressing schools Student Body Profile in DS

Post by jag13 » Thu Aug 11, 2016 5:50 pm

I was curious on everyones thoughts about addressing a schools profile in their diversity statement.

Something along the lines of (not actual wording, just the gist)

"With your current school profile of 6% of X ethnicity represented, I believe I could help strengthen this small percentage of diversity. blah blah blah"

I don't think it's necessary/worth it. If they care about their diversity numbers (most do), they'll know without you saying it. If they don't know they're not going to care. I think it comes across as a little inappropriate.

Edit: maybe something about how you'd value the chance/opportunity to strengthen and build the X community at law school y. But I wouldn't quote numbers.

I agree with the above, it's not going to help your diversity statement. No numbers. Depending on your angle or the story you're trying to tell, just focus on that and how you're different from the average law school candidate, whether it's by race, something that has happened to you, or your untraditional path to wanting to practice law. Your diversity statement shouldn't be an academic essay in terms of content, it should really compliment your personal statement and your application so that the committee gets a cohesive sense of who you are as a person. Hope this helps :-)
