News/Media, Is law school right for me?

Post by Paramagnetic » Thu May 26, 2016 5:56 pm

Hello everyone.

I'm a rising senior at a large state school right now. My GPA is 3.52 right now and, with a reasonably successful senior year, will rise to ~3.6. I'm a STEM major, premed with 5 years work/volunteer experience as an EMT. I enjoy medicine, however the academic side of things is becoming insurmountably uninteresting/demotivating to me (e.g., emphasis on research, classes hardly tangentially related to healthcare, etc.).

I've always had an interest in politics and media. I've habitually read the New York Times and Wall Street Journal over the past year and consumed tons of other political media over the past 4 years. I've been published by my schools newspaper in the OpEd section in an article in which I outlined some of my moderate political ideas and intend to make more submissions. I've developed a keen eye for bias and can make compelling arguments in favor of either end of the political spectrum.

I don't have a *passion* for law, rather an interest. However, I know I love media, journalism and politics. Right now, I am considering law school as a mechanism for entering either of the aforementioned fields. I feel that attending a reputable law school makes somebody a great candidate to be involved in news or politics.

Without stereotyping me as the "med school too hard ill try law school", I would like to know if my intentions for going to law school are reasonable.

If you have a passion for media, journalism, and politics, then study journalism. If you're more interested in writing policy than in commenting on it, then get an MPP.

None of the fields you want to go into require a law degree, so I have no idea why you'd want to spend three years (and an undetermined amount of cash) on a JD.

Also, fwiw, med school is a professional school too and not research-geared like the hard sciences. J-school works too.
