I-20 Form passport question for Canadians

Post by Calihawk » Thu May 26, 2016 2:36 am

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum to ask this.

I am ready to submit my Request for I-20 Form to my school.
The packet should include:
Completed I-20 Request Form (done)
Proof of Funding Documents etc. (yup)
Transfer in Request (N/A)
Program Extension Request (N/A)
and finally,
"Copies of the biographical and any U.S. visa page(s) from your passport (include passport copies for any dependent family for whom you're requesting an F-2 I-20)"

My question is, as someone with Canadian citizenship (and therefore someone that just needs an I-20 and not an F-1 visa..correct?), what do I submit for that last item? A picture/scan of the biographical page of my Canadian passport?

Thank you for any help anyone is able to offer.

I just scanned a picture of my passport page and that was sufficient

You are correct. As a Canadian, you do only need an I-20 form in place of a full F1 visa application - even though you will still be classified as an F1 Visa holder and expected to uphold all the rules of the F1 visa while you are a student.

Often, when you cross the border into the US from Canada, you merely get a stamp in your passport, and not an "official" visa (they will write dates, entry numbers, etc on/under the stamp if they are formally issuing you a visa). When I sent in my I-20 for undergrad, I only sent in my biographical page and my official visitor's visa from a few months earlier. And that was sufficient.

If you have already had a student visa or work visa issued to you, send copies of those pages as well.

But you could send in copies of any entry stamps you've received from the US in your passport just to play it safe.
