Chances at Law School Deferment Being Accepted

Post by Xnegd » Mon Feb 29, 2016 5:05 pm

Hello,

Applied way back in September. So far I've been accepted at San Diego, Peperdine, Loyola-LA, and Hawaii. Still waiting to hear from UC Davis, UC Hastings & UC Irvine - and wait listed at WUSTL & GW. All are schools that hold aspects I really like, so not sure where I want to end up, and can't visit the campus due to the major £,£££ it would cost even were I able to get time off work.

I currently live on an island in Europe and am applying for Dual Nationality. If I leave the country I loose that chance to apply, and due to a year long backlog they won't finish the process till an estimated date of Oct 23rd, long after the Fall semester has started. Having the ability to be able to work in the USA and Europe is very important to me, and what I expect would be a major career boost as I want to study International Law. Do you think this is an acceptable reason? I'm trying to get a letter from the govt to confirm this but no reply (think the're not keen to do such).

Seeing as I don't know which school I want to go to and haven't even herd back from them all, when should I ask for a deferment? Should I ask them all now and see what they say? How much info should I tell them and how should I frame it? The April deadlines are fast approaching so need to be quick I think.

Any advice on how I ask e.g. do I just send an email or do I request a phone call with the Admissions Dean? Any chance of a school I get off the wait list for allowing this? My LSAT expires this year so I can't really wait and reapply next year.

Any advice is welcome! :-)

Well in terms of when you should ask, I'd say that you should ask the moment the school you want to go to admits you and gives you scholarship money that works for you. Beware, though, schools are not often willing to defer scholarship money, so you want to get that negotiated up front.

I would think that having to sort out citizenship issues would be a valid reason for deferment. You should also make sure you have some kind good answer for what you're going to be doing in the intervening year.

For my answer of what I'd be doing, it would just be working and saving money.

Is that too bland?

It's not about being entertaining. As long as you're going to be productive I don't think it will raise too many hackles.

I deferred last year and NYU had 0 problem with it. I think a 1 year deferral is almost always approved because then they can count you as having accepted in their metrics.
