Law School with a green card. Forum

Am I at any disadvantage with getting loans, and scholarships, etc. I have been married for about three years (to a U.S. born citizen) therefore that's how I will have the green card and eventual citizenship(I'm very familiar with the process.) I am guessing there shouldn't be much of a difference for me in the applying process with the loans right? (If I am in good standing with everything else.) Opposed to how I am doing it right now by paying everything up front 100% (Undergrad, BA-Economics/Political Science, 4.0 GPA. LSAT-not due but I love that type of stuff. BTW, I am from Romania, San Francisco since 99' then Las Vegas since 04' back and forth 50/50 since 2008-2011 from here to the Bay Area working, just so you know a little bit about me, maybe a little too much lol, additionally I am twenty two years old.) Thank you.

The only slight disadvantage I know of is the 1L summer job search will be slightly hindered as you may be precluded from many government jobs, such as SEC, for not being a citizen.

Ha, I haven't even considered planning anything based on any employment during law school! Everything has been planned to strictly the sticker cost and living costs. I figure I have to really want to go (I really will go) for me to still be motivated after seeing that plan, lol. So, I know there's alot of talk about this, but would going T14 potentially have the best jobs during LS, or would being an outstanding applicant/candidate type that goes T14-T40 that will stand out in the area's market, respectively.

Then, search through past threads to find answers to specific questions. (I would use google instead of the built-in search engine, just append "site:top-law-schools.com" to your search.)

I'll leave off by saying, don't pay sticker anywhere and always assume you'll be median regardless of where you go.

I can tell you from experience that for purposes of loans etc, you'll be treated just like a citizen if you have a greencard. If you are a male, and first entered the US before turning 26, and didn't register for selective service, you may have a problem though.

ETA I see you're 22; if you haven't registered for selective service yet, get on it asap.

I can't register for selective service, because I don't have a SS# at the moment. Other than that, I told them I would go in the military if it came down to it, preferably an officer. Although, I cannot do that neither because you need to be a citizen, and I wanted to be special forces (Also need citizenship.) This is irrelevant to registering for the selective service, but what if I can't serve in the military due to the Lautenberg Amendment/agreement, would I need to register for selective service if they won't even let me serve as a volunteer????

I always do this first. Windows 10 (or my laptop) has this really nice feature where you can just type in the blank url (without anything past .com/ and press enter and it will make the url go away and say "search only on this site" so I can just go twitter.com/enter and it will say "Search twitter:" ____

Yeah, you'll need to register regardless, so go get a SSN. You can't take out federal loans if you haven't registered but should have.

No, the SSN isn't the problem, even when I get one the problem still stands. They won't let me volunteer in the military, I have tried (Kinda glad they didn't, lol) So if I tried to volunteer and they didn't let me (Even if I were a citizen.) If they have a draft, would they get rid of the Lautenberg agreement?

So, I just went to the selective service website and it says if you don't have a SSN, use the fillable form and mail it in (Opposed to online registration.) The fillable form also asks for my SSN, do I just leave it blank? Also, it's irrelevant that I did it at 22, as long as I did it right? They literally didn't have this "fillable form" option before.

Should be ok to do it late, as far as I understand matters. And it doesn't matter whether you can actually serve in the armed forces or not; you need to register regardless. There's not gonna be a draft anyway.
