I withdrew from a school but now I want to go there.

Post by fak221 » Mon Jul 13, 2015 12:08 pm

So a couple months ago I withdrew from a school that I thought I would definitely not be able to afford. It was one of my top choices but I didn't see how I was going to make it work financially. Well now my financial circumstances have changed and I will actually be able to afford going there. My question is, is it totally unacceptable to email the school and ask if it's possible to still be admitted even after I withdrew? Or should I just move on with my other choices?

Worth a shot. I'd call though.

I'd ask first. If they say no you can always withdraw and reapply next year if you really want to go there but that's a really risky move if you don't get in.

I would identify someone you spoke with individually if possible, and then I would call them. I would also be prepared to deposit immediately and tell them that when you're making your case--you need to convince them you're very serious.

And don't freak out if they say they have to get back to you or talk to an admissions committee. It might very well take them at least a day or two to figure out what to do with you, whether they want you over waitlist people/late applicants, etc. They can't just make the call individually, but if they're considering it at all, it's a good sign.

A good friend of mine did this. He called the admissions office, said he had a change of heart, and asked if they would let him back in and it worked. You should definitely at least ask.

If you tell them that this was your reasoning, i'm very very sure that they would let you back in.

Its a very atypical situation so we can't offer much by way of concrete guidance, but it certainly seems worth a shot. Your reasoning seems to make total sense. Of course, the logistics may no longer work out (ex. maybe more people accepted offers than they initially assumed or something like that), but it can't hurt to try.
