Dumb Question: Why Engineers Apply to Law School? Forum

Seen a good number of people claim they are engineers or are majoring in it here at TLS. Why go into law from a seemingly good field already?

Worth the risk, given the legal economy?

Zero b-school dreams. Avoided all business-related classes in law school.

Because I never really wanted to do engineering anyway and don't particularly enjoy it - though I do think that engineering has taught me a lot of valuable skills and has opened doors for me that wouldn't have been open otherwise.

Engineering was my contingency plan in case law didn't work out - a solid fall back

Realized engineering is way more boring than I thought it was and I don't love doing it. Also, working with engineers made me realize that the job I want will most likely require a PhD or a JD (or a ton of luck). Law school seems like the choice I would like more.

I was going to say "you thought law was a good idea to avoid this?" but nvm... you've caught on.

^^^ I know a lot of lawyer that have left the profession for similar reasons, so I completely understand why they'd change.

What I don't understand is why people who've had moderately successful business careers (i.e Big 4, large banks, etc.) doing any kind of work tangentially related to deals come into law school and end up being M&A attorneys. I'm not even a finance or accounting major, but I can tell what they did before can't possibly be more boring than anything they'd be doing at a law firm. Okay, maybe accounting... But the point remains. It's pretty dull work in comparison.
