Pets in LS?

Post by middlebear » Fri Jun 20, 2014 4:32 pm

Maybe a bit random, but: does anyone have any input/stories/guidance about taking pets to law school with you? (For me specifically, this would be a dog.) I know it would make finding housing a bit trickier--I'm thinking more in terms of having time to take care of your pet, etc.

Thanks!

Law school does not require 24 hrs/day. A lot of people have dogs, and you will likely have a lot more free time/time to go home during law school than you will afterwards.

Very doable with a mature, well-trained dog, but I'm sure a lot depends on your LS location and specific living situation (size, park proximity, roommates, etc.). Also on your income in case you need kennel service or emergency medical treatment, not to mention regular expenses.

Eh, if I'm already going to be underwater in debt, what's a little bit more on my pooch? And this is an older dog/couch potato with a bit of training under his belt, so I don't think there would be any big issues there.

Mainly replying to say that as a Russian Studies major, I very much appreciate your icon.

This question is asked every two months or so, I suggest using the search function if you want to read way too much analysis for such a simple topic.

Cliffs: there is no consensus, some say its fine, some say its a bad idea. I say you do you and follow your heart. I have cats and a dog and I think it's totally no big deal. I also have a SO to help take care of them. Only issue is when we travel, but that's a life thing, not a law school thing.

Thanks. I've been thinking about it a while, and I think this is happening.

And it's weird, I couldn't find anything on the forum search function but when I googled "law school pets" or whatever about six threads were the first results. Whatever, TLS.

The search function can be pretty sucky sometimes. "Dog in law school" should get some hits.

Mouse- I'm pretty annoyed that a) You don't even make jokes and b) You haven't fixed this problem yet.

Should I complain about this here or in the mod megathread?

So I have been VERY worried about this. I have a cat that I absolutely love and I can't imagine giving her away. I know I will have time to go home for two hours everyday and feed/play with her. But what I am really worried about is the travel. Say I go to one of the rural Midwest schools in the middle of nowhere like Indiana, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, etc. Then what does my travel look like? Probably 2L summer most definitely right?

The thing for me is I will probably be living alone specifically because of my cat and I want to find a school where rent is cheap in the Midwest (my target area). I am only worried about the travel, because a cat isn't something you can take to a kennel like a dog.

So I guess what I am asking is when you get a job 2L summer in a different city, what type of housing do you have? Can you get apartments that are pet friendly for only three months? And how do callbacks work?

Any information is much appreciated. I really don't want to give my cat away, I rescued her as a baby and now we are super close. I just cant imagine not being able to make this work.

Thank you!

Have you never apartment hunted before? I have never had problems finding an apartment I could bring my cats to.

Wouldn't most of those hits be male horn dogs?

If you go to a school like Indiana or Wisconsin it should be to find work in that state, so it's not like you'll be traveling across the country. Still, good chance you and your cat might have to drive to another city in that state to work for a summer, in which case Craig's List sublet I guess?

Callbacks are for big law, you almost certainly won't get a callback that would require you to travel especially far from any of those schools. And even if there was one for a couple of days, the cat should be fine. It's a cat.
