Re: Drug abuse in law school?
How could anyone possibly give you a legit statistic?SnowWhite wrote:Curious on average what % of students at the top law schools abuse performance enhancing drugs such as adderall, vyvanse etc to get ahead of others during the year. I personally don't have any form of Adhd or concentration issues, but knew people in undergrad that abused it and am somewhat concerned about being at a disadvantage. A lot of the law students I saw during ASD were clutching a starbucks drink or a redbull, but caffeine is obv a legal stimulant lol.
No shit a lot of people use stimulants, and probably at a slightly higher rate than undergrad, given the coked out appearances a lot of law students have. Not something you need to worry about. A fairly diligent sober person generally shits on those trying to take a stimulant-paved shortcut. If you don't want to work hard, that's cool, but I'd focus more on that than on the "disadvantage" you'd be at by not taking stims.

Just study hard, focus on yourself and don't concern yourself with what others are doing

Drug abuse in law school is usually confined to bath salts and jenkem.SnowWhite wrote:Curious on average what % of students at the top law schools abuse performance enhancing drugs such as adderall, vyvanse etc to get ahead of others during the year. Re: Drug abuse in law school?
Your grade comes down solely to how you do on a 3 hour exam and knowing the material isn't the hard part you need to be good at exams which is basically it's own skill. I just don't think taking adderall, vivance, ect. really lends itself to these types of exams or preparing for them. Sure maybe you could study a little more productively but almost everyone will know the law at the end so any advantage if at all is minimal.

Exactly. Those drugs will not help you out with law school exams, but jenkem is another story. Jenkem will essentially teach you everything you will ever need to know about law, along with giving you dragon breath for a month.lawhopeful10 wrote:Your grade comes down solely to how you do on a 3 hour exam and knowing the material isn't the hard part you need to be good at exams which is basically it's own skill. And the best part is.......You can make it yourself!!!

Most everyone negates their productive substance abuse (adderall) with unproductive substance abuse (booze). You'll be fine.

Yeah I would say it is quite a big stretch.Clearly wrote:also, calling this drug abuse is prob a bit of a stretch.
OP, don't confuse adderall and these things as some sort of Limitless drug that really gives you an intelligence boost and makes you smarter than others. It allows you to cram a lot of studying in a short period of time. Which is why it can be effective for the night before a midterm in undergrad to memorize a few chapters and then completely forget everything you learned after the test. I've never taken a law exam but I would imagine that the whole "oh I'll just take some adderall this weekend and catch up on all the readings before the exam" wouldn't play out as well on a law exam as it does on undergrad exams.
And seriously, just worry about yourself and don't make excuses and point blame to others' if you don't do well.

Re: Drug abuse in law school?
I'm pretty sure there are actually statistics that show students who use stimulants non-medically actually have lower GPAs than students who don't. I would try to find it if I wasn't supposed to be writing a paper right now...

Re: Drug abuse in law school?
Here are the latest statistics from the academic year 2012-2013:
Alcohol - 90% on average (lowest: 5% at BYU; highest: 100% at U Alabama)
Cannabis - 65% on average (lowest: 3.5% at BYU; highest: 95% at Boalt, U Colorado, U Hawaii, and Lewis & Clark)
Heroin/Meth - 10% on average (lowest: 0% at BYU; highest: 20% at U Missouri and Thomas Jefferson)
Narcotics - 40% on average (lowest: 1% at BYU; highest: 55% at Arizona State, USC, BU, and Washington & Lee)
Stimulants - 98% on average (lowest: 0% at U Maine and Stetson; highest: 100% at Baylor, BYU, and Hastings)
Word on the street is that these statistics will be included in the US News rankings algorithm for 2016 which means BYU will likely move into the Top 20.

Re: Drug abuse in law school?
All of this. I'm an 0L but I have a legal prescription for Vyvanse, and I can't really see how it would help that much. Yes, it makes it a bit easier to sit at the library all night and cram in reading, but like someone said earlier ITT, by exam day everyone will know the material. It comes down to how well you perform on test day, and I don't think any type of stimulant drug would help with that.drevo wrote:
