How much reading do you do a week as a 1L - POLL
How much are you required to read for all your classes in the average week? You can include your Law School if you want.

Depends on how many credits you are taking. I'd say you generally have about 30-50 casebook pages a day of reading on average per a 2 classes per week class, and maybe 20-40 for a 3 classes per week class. (Both are assuming a 4 credit class.) So i'm guessing that works out to 60-100 pages per week per class, and at my school, first semester you have 4 classes, so somewhere between 240-400 pages with all of your classes. This can change obviously if you have a seminar, etc.john1990 wrote:How much are you required to read for all your classes in the average week? You can include your Law School if you want.

Yea, depends on the class. For three classes each 3 days a week, between each class: 20-25 pgs in contracts, 30-100 in torts (was incredibly random - once assigned nearly 200 pgs b/t classes just because we were behind), around 50 as standard in civ pro with some lighter days some heavier. So daily ~100-150, weekly 300-400.

My reading load always seemed to be light. Per class it was usually 10 or fewer pages for contracts, 10-15 pages for civpro, 15-20 for torts.

Yeah, that sounds extremely light to me. 10 pages? That's maybe one or two cases at most.arklaw13 wrote:My reading load always seemed to be light. Per class it was usually 10 or fewer pages for contracts, 10-15 pages for civpro, 15-20 for torts.

We usually only do 2-3 cases per class and the casebook edits them down to 3-4 pages max. There have been times where we've had 20 pages for a class, but that's rare.ph14 wrote:Yeah, that sounds extremely light to me. 10 pages? 20/day on average per class, 40 pages per week per class, 3 classes, 120 pages a week for all classes + nongraded lrw which is probably 30/week but I did 0/week

Each of my three substantive classes usually assigned 20-30 pages per class, and we usually met three times per week. And then LARW but those readings are mostly fluff.
So... between 60 and 90 pages each of those three days a week, between 180 and 270 per week?

Usually 20 pages a night per class.
Additional light reading too but nothing major.
So around 140 pages of normal casebook reading, along with maybe another 20 or so for legal writing class
Edit: Lol sinfiery is in my section. Sounds about right.
I too did zero reading for legal writing.

For the benefit of 0Ls, I just gotta add that law school reading is not like UG reading. It's (usually) not fluffy, walk-in-the-park, skim-worthy stuff. You will struggle to get through every page, at least during your first semester. You'll often need to give certain passages a second read. And because you will fear the cold call, you'll take notes furiously...
... until you realize that cold calling is a joke, you discover outlines and supplements, take your first exams and realize that you didn't need to spend all that time reading and taking notes. But that learning curve is inevitable.
So while 20 pages per class session sounds like a breeze, it's not. HTH.
