Most beneficial WE?

Post by PeanutsNJam » Thu Nov 01, 2012 6:29 pm

So I got my score (170), and I'm planning on retaking becuase I know I can do better. I'm currently a senior in college. It's pretty clear that the best path available to me is to get a job and some WE (My gpa is sub 3.0). What kind of job should I look for? Or does it not really matter? Like if I'm a bar manager vs a paralegal? I'm talking about the splitter-friendly WE-friendly schools.

Whatever pays the most is probably the best answer. You can sell whatever job you have easily enough that money differences for a marginally better title aren't worth it. All things equal working as a paralegal can be a good idea to see the ins and outs of attorney life and decide if it is really worth three years and a lot of money to pursue and there is always an off chance the networking will pay off. Don't count on law schools caring though.

Management consulting. Investment banking (unfortunately, Goldman isn't doing their training program anymore). Failing that, probably Peace Corps or TfA. Starting your own business.

You can spin a lot of stuff well if you're clever enough, but the above are reliable.

Anything full-time shows employers you can show up for work. Anything with management experience or significant responsibilities (safety-sensitive, money-handling, etc.) is a bonus because it further reinforces you're a responsible person. But basically any WE is good WE, and you should choose something you want to do, not necessarily because it might help you get into a law school.

Do what you are passionate about. Your passion and authenticity will come out in a personal statement, or you might decide that law school isnt for you.

I would have to say that the best work experience is effective LSAT prep.

But seriously, there is nothing a 25 year old will have done that will make their LSAT irrelevant. Now if you are 40 and have a MD or PhD in Engineering and about a decade of industry experience, you have a wonderful future in front of you.

HR/IR could be good for employment law.

Accounting/Finance for tax.

Engineering for patent law.

Otherwise it all kind of seems the same and more dictated by prestige than actual work experience.
