I was reading on Rutgers website under admissions that you can indicate on your application if you would like admissions to consider your work experience/LORs more heavily than your numbers.

has anyone tried this/feel that they had any success? do you think they really do that if noted?

Yes, I checked it and yes, I think they do just what they say. It worked for me though, I was in their numbers range as well.
