Question about legal careers at Wealthy Family Offices

Post by PrelawSteve » Thu Mar 01, 2012 2:00 am

Hello,

My ultimate goal is to one day work for a wealthy famiy directly as part of their Family Office( Many wealthy families like the Rockefellers have full fledged offices with in house legal departmentsm in house investments funds, etc) My questions are the following:

1. What type of post-law experience would one need to get hired at a wealthy family office? I doubt that they would hire right out of law school, so what type of firm experience or such would be required?

2. To anyone's knowledge, what are working conditions and compensation like at private family offices?

I would tremendously appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks

Speculating:

I'd imagine working at a firm in something like private wealth services (e.g. --LinkRemoved--) would be an ideal starting position. Though these departments are small and rare at big firms.

This also interests me. Hopefully I made a good impression on my great uncle the one time I met him.

The best chance of landing such a job is through contacts.
Otherwise, look for mid-size accounting/wealth management firms that state they are "full service", as these are most likely to have a large enough department.

Make sure you take classes in taxes, trusts/estates and insurance, as these are the most important aspects of such jobs.
