Grad School Before Law School

Post by WVH » Fri Feb 24, 2012 3:15 pm

I am currently an undergrad studying history at DePaul University. My plan is to go to law school to study international law, however I am thinking about going to grad school first. If I did go to grad school, can someone recommend what would be best to study.

Well, IMHO, if you know you want to be an attorney, skip grad school, and go to law school. grad school is likely to to cost you 2 years of your life and 50 grand....If you really want another degree, get a duel jd/mba or somthing.

For the vaaaast majority of law students, law school will gain you entrée into the profession, and not do much more than that. What is your end goal? Not in terms of what to "study," but for what to do with your life?

You could study what interests you, or what would give you some other skills that law schools wouldn't give you. But you can always do a dual JD/Masters like mentioned above. The extra cost is going to be the same, but you don't have to spent an extra year or two. Master's degree do not usually make you any more employable (except for engineering degrees and professional masters) so don't do it for job reasons.

I would discourage grad school before law school or you will always be saddled with the "why law school" question in interviews.

You will always get "Why law school" question. I get the "why grad school" question, which I have a very good answer. But I think you should have a good answer to everything you did in life regardless.
