Movie Agent
So, this might sound a little crazy, but I have to ask: How hard is it to become a movie agent? Should I go to a place like UCLA or USC and try to get a job at an agency after I graduate? Is a law degree even necessary? Any information is appreciated.

Law degree is not necessary or even really helpful

Could you (or anyone else) expand on that? If not a law degree, what is helpful when pursuing a career in this field?Patriot1208 wrote:Law degree is not necessary or even really helpful

Connections and contacts, experience in the field, and luck. Law will just help you do the paperworkLost Old Password wrote:Could you (or anyone else) expand on that? Traits/Skills that help become an agent:
1. The ability to BS like a used car salesman
2. Connections in the industry; usually obtained in some way from using skill #1.
3. Money out the azz to throw around at the beginning to pretend like you are more important than you really are. Also helps to get you by while trying to make contacts w/ up & coming talent.
4. Cocaine. Lots and lots of it.

Re: Movie Agent
Heh the amount of jaded comments on the subjects are kind of surprising.
OP, don't get your JD unless you have decided you unequivocally don't want to be agent and DO want to be a lawyer. You are going to have to crack into one of the agencies in their mailroom. Typically, this happens by connecting with one of the big agency's intern programs. You are going to make shit money for what will seem like a long time. Sure a JD might help you think in a way that would be you an advantage over other people trying to take those limited jobs and it would give you diversity if you decide you dont want to become an agent, but that doesn't justify dropping 150k and whatever wages you could have earned in those three years.

Your best bet is networking your way into a mailroom job and working your way up, that's what most do.

This is one of the most obvious trolling attempts I've ever seen. New account? Wanting to be a movie agent after attending law school?
Come on guys.

Re: Movie Agent
Not trolling, just curious. Thanks for the answers. Sounds like law school is an expensive option that wouldn't substantially help someone get a job at any big talent agency. But how does one go about contacting a place CAA or WME? Seems like you would need connections just to get your foot in the door.
