UVA Early Decision Advice For a Splitter
Hi Folks,
My name is HenryClay and I'm a splitter (163/3.98). I understand that UVA generally takes some splitters in their ED, at least moreso than other T14s on the east coast (I also was a VA resident for a year, though not anymore)
I'm very tempted to apply early to UVA ED (couldn't hurt), but wonder how this might affect my career. If I was interested in Biglaw this would be a no-brainer. But my dream job is to be an ADA in NYC. I understand Georgetown has a lot of NYC government connections but the same doesn't seem to be true of UVA. So, TLSers, which of the following do you think is the best course of action
1) Apply binding early to UVA -- unlikely I'll get in, but maybe my best shot @ East Coast T14
2) Apply binding early to Gtown -- very unlikely I'll get it but can't hurt and appears to have a better alum network in NYC DA's offices
3) Keep my options open -- go to Fordham or another regional T1 that will give me more networking opportunity in my desired field, maybe shoot for a transfer to NYU/Columbia
Thanks!

Yeah, I'll probably be retaking (I do terrible on standardized tests so I'm not sure if I'm going to improve that much), but it will be for next year's admissions. I figure I may as well throw a couple applications out this round just to see if I get lucky. I have a fee waiver so they're mostly free and I want to take advantage of that .

I would ED UVA and retake if not accepted.
I'm not an expert on the market you're referring to, but I'd have to guess NYC DA office is very difficult to get into, and I doubt GULC will give you a better shot there than UVA (or another school ranked higher than GULC) will. Someone with more knowledge can correct me.
Also, GULC is not letting in a 163 non-URM.

If you take as much time as you need to prep for February 2012 or June 2012 (consider taking a prep course if that is fit for you), you could very well end up with a nice scholarship offer at Columbia or NYU in the heart of NYC.
I wouldn't let that GPA go to waste, but if you are set on applying this year I would ED UVA and you will probably get in.

If you're set on applying this cycle, snap call UVA ED if for nothing but to balance out our GPAs if I apply GULC seems like they weigh LSAT heavier. As for portability of degree, no idea but I don't imagine it'd be much different at UVA or GULC.

FYI - there are plenty of UVA alums in the Manhattan DA's office (including a fair number of higher ups).HenryClay wrote:Hi Folks,
