Same law school as undergrad?

Post by IamJosh » Mon Jul 25, 2011 2:40 am

Is it a bad thing? My UG has a top 20 law program which allows us to apply middle of junior year. I've learned that to work in academia, getting a PhD from the same school you get your BA from doesn't look good to employers. I was wondering if there is a similar situation for law.

Also, do schools look favorably on their undergrads applying to their law programs? Or is it just that I would be competing with other students from my school and that's it--same chances as if I applied normally?

Very quickly:

1. No it doesn't seem like employers will have a negative perception of you for going to the same law school as UG. Basically they'll just view you based on how good the law school is.

2. As for applying, this can vary. Some schools its easier to get in if you went to the UG, others some say its neutral or possibly harder (i.e. don't want too many of the same). So its mainly a school by school basis.

From my experiences, generally going to the same LS as UG is a fatal mistake and you will not be hired in any capacity by any respectable employer in the legal world at any time. Unless you get an LLM from the same school to reverse the aforementioned effects and then every V100 will be begging to pay you 160k. HTH
