Report girl for using her westlaw for work purposes?

Post by Bronx Bum » Sat Jul 23, 2011 11:42 am

There's this girl in an interschool club that my school competes/practices with. She mentioned how she works for a firm and they sometimes ask her to do research on her school westlaw account. Should I report her to her school's westlaw rep? Or even to westlaw?

I think it's very unethical for her to make money off of this/for the firm to make money off of this. Many of us attend seminars to improve our research skills, while others are "recklessly" researching on westlaw's dime/the school's dime. I think this would be a good test of professionalism but am I letting down the profession by not reporting her?

You're going to report her - someone you barely know - based on something she mentioned to you? How do you know she is even telling you the truth? Do NOT do this. You have no obligation here. Just worry about your own life.

Yes you are absolutely obligated to report under the school's honor code. In fact, if you do not report then I am obligated to report you for not reporting.

You should make a poll. The options should be:

1) Be a dick and report her

2) Mind my own fucking business, and worry about how I'll pay off the six figure debt I accumulated at Fordham.

In any event, the only right answer here is no. Sure, Westlaw has requirements about when people are allowed to use their services but your school does not. Are you going to report them to Westlaw? Really? That's Westlaw's job: monitor accounts people say they're using for research playing and notice when all they've been searching is the bankruptcy code for 3 months.

Reporting her to your school (or her school) will likely get you laughed at and you will look like a tool.

Shit like this? Shit like this is why we can't have nice things, law student / TLS population.

OP: I hope that a disproportionate share of the world's immense sorrow befalls you.

I wanted to suggest this as an option. Generally the suggestion of "killself" is forbidden, but in this case, I actually think it's the best course of action.

I think people are being fairly harsh with OP (assuming OP is being genuine, but I get the sense he/she is). Granted, I think it is probably not something that OP needs to worry about, but ignoring unethical behavior isn't always the right approach. Will reporting ethical breaches make a person popular? No, probably to the contrary. But at a certain point taking a popularity hit for the sake of holding someone accountable is credited IMO. This is probably not at that point, however.

Some of the vitriol directed at OP is really is really over the top IMO, regardless of whether OP would in error in this particular instance by reporting.

I'm pretty sure all Westlaw users have a 24/7 worldwide duty to report abuse of the contract...
