These friend of friend interviews can be valuable, but they are not job interviews. Associates aren't in a position to hire, however, if you become friends with the person they can provide a ton of support down the road, help you target the firm, and put in a good word for you. Don't be too gung-ho about the professional talk. If you can talk baseball, talk baseball. I friend in a good place is more valuable than a stranger who thinks you are competent.
