What law school are you attending?

And FWIW I think this is unethical. If anyone finds out you might be dinged, either for admission or C&F.

the whole point of a deposit is to make you accountable in some way for holding a spot or a contract of some kind that could potentially cost money to the person or business providing the good or service, correct? deposits are generally non-refundable, that's why you only put them down at schools you are really intending to attend. and as far as rent deposits, the landlord may have had the opportunity to rent to someone else, who he turned down b/c you signed some sort of contract saying you'd be living there and paying the rent. now, he/ she may well have to go looking for other tenants.

but let's be honest, you should know the answer to your question already.

It was more me wondering where you got in that was so great it caused you to give up all the money you've invested/contemplate unethical actions. It's not like I know your name or any identifying information-- I can't "report" you. I think you're paranoid because you know it's wrong.

I think they'd just send a debt collection agency after you. They get paid by the debt collection agency a fraction of the amount and the debt collection agency thrashes your credit if you don't pay up.

serious question:

do you think that the "non-refundable" provision on your tuition deposit is unenforceable, or do you just not give a shit?

I'm curious about this too. Those deposit contracts don't take more than a minute to read and are quite clear about the non-refundable nature of deposits. Suck it up and move on.

Dude, just go to Tulane if you're that worried about losing your money. UNC isn't a big enough deal, and USD will leave you unemployed. Enjoy the Big Easy.

Contract or no, what the hell else does "deposit" mean anywhere in the world?

According to what I've read it should be unenforceable because most judges hold that nonrefundable language does not make something nonrefundable unless damages are incurred. When a law school fills its class from an existing waitlist, no damages occur. When something is labeled nonrefundable strictly to impose a penalty, as in the case of law school deposits, they are typically refundable (if adjudicated).

I'm not doing this to be a jerk, either: I need the money to move and pay tuition at my new school.

Also, none of the schools I deposited at had a deposit contract.
then why don't you write them and ask for your money back?

Odds that the schools send out OP's real name to other schools when the deposits get cancelled?

ITT: OP asks if he might be able to get his deposits back, then assures you that he can.

haha, in all seriousness though and ethical crap aside - don't do this because the schools you deposited at might take a crap on you. charging back on someone by saying it's "fraudulent" or "goods not received" isn't like getting a bounced check. bounced check might mean you're broke and it was an accident. actually taking action to prevent a law school from receiving payment = baddd.

Ya, this can't be a good idea. Also, putting down a deposit basically holds onto a seat for you, that they could've given to another applicant much sooner. By depositing and backing out a case could be made that you hurt their class. You likely didn't, but I wouldn't try and get the deposit back through the Credit Card company. The school could get pissed and make your life much harder.

If you really have to have the money back, it can't hurt to plead your case to the school, but I doubt they will have much sympathy. The money you put down is the price you pay for having a seat reserved in case your W/Ls don't come through.

Nope. Simply did not receive anything other than unhelpful "opinions." No experience was offered. Got over half of my money back--didn't need the thread.
