Not working while attending part time

Post by risktaker » Sun May 22, 2011 2:42 pm

How bad does it look to attend a school part-time and not work while attending PT? I might be able to get a part time tutoring gig, but that is about it. I plan to switch to FT after my first year. Will not working FT while doing one year of PT look terrible to employers? All advice would be appreciated.

No one has an idea about this? Any personal accounts would help.

Yes, it looks bad. The implication is that you're attending a PT program in order to work while going to school. If you don't work, it seems like you're attending part time because you couldn't get in to a full time program. I don't think it matters what kind of work you do, as long as you're doing something while in school.

Do I have to work full time or would working part time be okay in the eyes of the employers?

I don't have experience in this, so someone else is probably better qualified to answer, but I think even part-time work would be okay. It would certainly be better than nothing.

Lots of part-time students do this, especially ITE, or if they have other obligations. You could intern at some non-profit, volunteer, or get a job working from home. I don't think not working would hurt you, but doing something with your time away from class is always beneficial.
