I plan to bring my laptop, a spiral notebook, and a pen to class. Then if I'm wrong about my supplies, I shall adjust accordingly. I'm sure you'll find out quickly from students/profs about what you'll need, like word processing software or a subscription to Lexis /Westlaw / whatever. I don't think you'll need special aids, I'm pretty sure whatever worked for ya throughout undergrad in the note taking department will suffice

I have to admit for undergrad most "notes" I've taken are just copying down what the professor wrote on the board.

or worse-- in my department it was copying down what's on the powerpoint. It wasn't until I took some old school teachers who still used a chalkboard that I ever learned how to disseminate the important info, as they would just stand there and talk and there was nothing else to go on.

I have terrible handwriting so laptop + One note was key for me.

Just don't try to take dictation of the prof, try to summarize.

^ Thank you. I've now seen a few recommendations for One Note, so it looks like I'll wind up getting Office 2010 sometime soon.

While I'm at it, I'll ask this: do professors typically allow students to record lectures or are they strictly against it? I have hearing difficulties and would like to be able to review the lectures aurally when working on my outlines.

If you have hearing problems that are a documented disability, the school will probably let you make any accommodations you need. If they are not documented, you should prob talk to each prof about your problem and see what they will be willing to work out with you.

don't schools give you lockers so you don't have to haul all the shit around in a backpack? I hurt my back pretty bad in HS carrying around all my books. Sometimes it still flares up. Since then I refuse to carry more than 1 or 2 textbooks at a time.

ETA: and I never use a rolly, using a rolly generally makes everyone else have to move out of your way and they are obnoxious when other people use them in a tight hallway. You could always use a hiking backpack (you know, the kind with a frame and great support for those overnight hiking/camping trips)

There is someone i work with who brings one of those rolly bags. She's a little older, and i presume she is using it as a purse, but seriously, the thing would not fit in an overhead compartment on a domestic flight. i have asked around and no one seems to know what's in there. it's a constant source of entertainment/debate for everyone to guess what she might be carrying.
