Socratic method

Post by HarlandBassett » Thu Jan 06, 2011 2:09 pm

What is this "soft" vs. "hard" Socratic methods I keep running across (while reading threads on TLS)?

The "hard" Socratic method is the one you see in movies about law school. The professor selects a student and asks them difficult questions for a period of time, whether the student can respond or not. In the "soft" Socratic method, the professor might select a student and if he cannot answer, then selects another. Or he could just ask for volunteers to respond to his question.

Most professors today have a mixed style, probably tending more toward the "soft" Socratic.

not.

It depends on your context. I was thinking about it in terms of soft and hard sells in business.
