First in family?

This may sound dumb, but for clarification purposes the extent of family means siblings and parents only?

Yes, this is the normative situation. You can definitely say that you are the first to go to college in your family if neither your parents or siblings have gone before you. Schools don't expect you to go three generations back for every statement.
