Post by shemori » Fri Oct 08, 2010 2:15 am

Are the necessary to get through classes in law school? I find it easier to write notes in a notebook...

Not true. Might depend on school, but most at least have an option to hand write.

Laptops are not required. If paper is your friend and you work better on paper, then you will likely be able to go without a laptop. You school may have varying rules though and may require a laptop. You still need will likely need a computer to work on memos and research assignments, but any computer is sufficient for this.

Do what works for you, but don't close yourself off to the idea of working on a laptop if it will make you more productive.

Even if offered that option, it's going to be a significant disadvantage. Most people can't write an exam at more than about 20 wpm, while most can type 2-4x as fast.

FWIW several people in my section take handwritten notes. As long as you're comfortable typing for exams you'll be fine.

I started with handwritten, but had to give it up.

Profs jump around too much to make them cohesive.

There are a few diehards that do paper notes. Paper notes do make sense for a few subjects, such as corporate tax, where you will drawing a lot of diagrams.

Regardless of how you do notes, you are going to need a laptop for writing and such.

must everyone has a laptop. Some classes seem to work better with laptops some don't. I do know one of my classmates who doesn't have a laptop and they are pretty lost with crazy scribbled notes that really don't make sense.

Personally, I would rather have my laptop and not need it, than need it than not have it.
