Optional Diversity Essay

Post by mixmastermw » Mon Sep 20, 2010 5:55 pm

I have encounter a few Law Schools suggesting an optional diversity essay. An Example is this prompt. Discuss how your interests, background, life experiences, and perspectives would contribute to the diversity of the entering class? From what I read about applying I should complete the optional essay. I am a middle class white male, would it seem disingenuous to try and write an essay about my diversity?

Don't write one unless you are actually diverse and could craft that into a well-written essay. Submitting no essay is a thousand times better that submitting a crappy or even mediocre essay.

And no, you don't need to do all the optional essays. It may help a smidge but unless it is done very well it isn't going to help.

Thanks for the advice. Some of my friends already in law school said the same thing.

If you're from a rural area, or a state that doesn't send many people to the particular law school, or you are extremely religious, then consider it if you can tell a good story. Otherwise, less is more.
