Considering law school....
For any 0L or incoming 1L, spend two days in any major courthouse and witness the demeanor of the attorneys around u. Are they happy? Some are, but the vast majority exude their anguish. I am saying this because even if you get through law school, you have the misery of the profession. There are joys of being a lawyer: being an expert in your area of law. But, there is a reason that JDs have some of the highest rate of substance abuse of any profession. It is an awful job/life. If you want it, go for it, but for most, you will be disappointed assuming you have the grades.
Remember that once you have the JD, you have closed the door on anything other than being a lawyer with the debt.

Yes, because every other profession is rainbows and flutterbies. Or is it butterflies? I can never remember.

I'm planning to be a lawyer for the sole purposes of bankrupting people, making them cry, and perhaps help them contemplate suicide.
That's right. Death and tears feed me in the most erotic of ways.

Wow. OP completely broke open the law school myth. Up until this point everyone on TLS thought that lawyers are infatuated with their jobs, work 35 hours a week, and make 7 figures.

People say they work 80 hours a week, but I think it's just 45 hours of golf mixed into it... you know, for making sure you can play the other 35 hours good while talking to clients.GATORTIM wrote:wait! I imagine there is a high correlation between miserable lawyers and those who went into law school for money and not because they wanted to be lawyers.

Just because other professions are not doing so well is hardly a rebuttal to the original argument. The joy of dealing with 0Ls.bk187 wrote:Yes, because every other profession is rainbows and flutterbies. Or is it butterflies? I can never remember.

Sounds like something I don't know anything about but would like the idea of doing it.rad law wrote:I got a great ski trip planned for this summer as well.ResolutePear wrote:Call me when you throw your next "blow bash".rad law wrote:I already abuse substances so who the hell cares. Screw law school. I've seen the light and am going to teach elementary school instead so that I can have a meaningful impact on people's lives. $27k/year here I come!

My second grade teacher was a dick so I got a black eye and reported that he did it to me. Then when everybody was in the office(cops, teacher, administrative, parents, etc.), I said: Eh, just kidding.
He died from a heart attack a year later. Making 28k. At a relatively young age... 35-45. Yep.

The original argument is that you can tell that being a lawyer is a crappy job by looking at the sad faces of lawyers around a courthouse. I think bk187's response was an adequate rebuttal to such an argument.NoJob wrote:Just because other professions are not doing so well is hardly a rebuttal to the original argument. I would be interested to know what percentage of lawyers actually spend a substantial amount of time in the courts. At the firm I work for, it's pretty rare.saucie wrote:The original argument is that you can tell that being a lawyer is a crappy job by looking at the sad faces of lawyers around a courthouse. Did you give yourself the black eye or did you make the most out of someone else giving you one?ResolutePear wrote:2014 wrote:Screw law school. I've seen the light and am going to teach elementary school instead so that I can have a meaningful impact on people's lives. $27k/year here I come!
