How Much Do You Print at Home?
If its a lot I'm going to buy a laser printer, but if it's not a lot I'll keep my ink jet.

Re: How Much Do You Print at Home?
I know I'm going to print a LOT because i hate reading off computer screens, but our campus has printers for 10cents a page (swipe your student I.D. to pay) that I've utilized for 4 years... So I'll probably stick with that.

I print maybe 50 pages a week. My building has free printing.

I thought law students normally got free printing at the school. Isn't why there was that big hubub on ATL about WestLaw not giving Puerto Rican law schools free printing anymore?

Re: How Much Do You Print at Home?
My undergrad gave us a print quota each semester. You're given 100 "dollars" and every page costs you 10 cents. If law school does not do something similar i'm going to be royally peeved.

Re: How Much Do You Print at Home?
I print a lot in law school...outlines, notes, drafts of memos/briefs, take home exams, sometimes profs post PDFs of readings, etc.
I estimate that I printed about 3000 pages during 1L (used a 1000 page toner cartridge and still working on a 2500 page cartridge). Get this one - http://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-2170W- ... 287&sr=8-1
check the price a few times a week...it is $135 right now but I got it for $89.99 direct from Amazon. Toner cartridges should be around $40 for the standard and $50 for the high-yield. You should get them from amazon as well. And if you don't have an Amazon Chase card, I recommend one. I usually have about $150-200 per year in reward points to spend on textbooks.

I just looked at Chicago's policy: you get 1,200 pages free, then I think you can pay $.20/page if you need more.

You can't print everything for free. Only documents from West or Lexis can be printed for free.thorntll wrote:I thought law students normally got free printing at the school. Isn't why there was that big hubub on ATL about WestLaw not giving Puerto Rican law schools free printing anymore?

At my school you're "given" $50 a year to start with, and B&W printing is .07 a page. Anything printed from Westlaw or Lexis is free. I didn't do a lot of printing--just my final memo and brief drafts, and some outlines at the end of each semester, so didn't even use half my allowance (killing the balance off with printing personal projects this summer, though).

Dude, $50 for the high yield? You can get them for roughly $18-20 if you look around carefully on the web.

I don't see any situation where buying a laser printer is worth it. Too much printing at school for the convenience (even if they charge).

Laser printers are pretty cheap nowadays and you can find plenty of cheap toner resellers online. Just wish my school also offered free printing, though I have to wonder just how much of it would come out of my tuition anyway.

Re: How Much Do You Print at Home?
Ok, maybe someone can interpret this, from the school's site about printing:
black-and-white laser output:
single-sided: $0.05 per printed side
double-sided: $0.10 per printed side
Sooo, twice as much for double-sided? Win = waste paper?

Printing at most law schools is basically free, but having a printer is still nice, since you won't have to go to the campus grounds to do routine printing. I'm personally buying this $60 laser printer to get me through the next two years: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6828113290
(the sale lasts until the 26th)

THAT'S A STEAL OF A PRICE!!!! I paid $10 more.General Tso wrote:its the same price on amazon with no taxCavalier wrote:Printing at most law schools is basically free, but having a printer is still nice, since you won't have to go to thecampusgrounds to do routine printing. It's a GREAT printer. It's not wireless, but no big deal and you can get a re-manufactured toner drum for $25 that will last anywhere from 4000-12000 pages.

I printed a ton, but all at the law school. You're typically given a pretty massive printing quota. I never really thought it an advantage to be able to print at home.Desert Fox wrote:If its a lot I'm going to buy a laser printer, but if it's not a lot I'll keep my ink jet.

Re: How Much Do You Print at Home?
Wouldn't this be dependent on the school? I've been told by several people (including current students) that printing at the NYU law library is free, and they didn't attach any qualifiers. Something to look into...General Tso wrote:You can't print everything for free. I'm prolly going to get a printer. I don't study a lot at the library and I like to print readings off so I'm not staring at the screen for long hours...

Re: How Much Do You Print at Home?
I made it through 1L without a printer. Unlimited free lexis/westlaw printing and something like 2500 pages of other printing free. If you print double sided it only counts as one, so really 5000 pages. No way you will use that up, even printing tons of outlines.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
