How am i going to get into a top law school with a low gpa?

Post by eastwind » Fri Jul 16, 2010 12:01 pm

Hi,
I don` t know where to ask this question, but i hope i am in the right forum.

A little something about me. I always had a love of study, and learning( many hours in the library), but i never had a clear goal of what i wanted to do when i was getting my bachelor degree. Like most people, i just took a bunch of math classes, and got a degree in applied mathematics with concentration in computing from UCLA with a general gpa of 2.98, and gpa for the subject at 3.15.

After a year of suck in the real world, i want to study the law. I never had this "focus" before. I want to study the law at a top law school, and be a lawyer, or even a law scholar( goal). Since my gpa suck, how the hell am i going to achieve my goal? I figure there are two ways for me to go. One, i go for a 2 bachelor, or a master in philosophy( i love), and rise my gpa to something more better than the shit i have. Two, i score really high at the lsat, and write a diversity statement of why my gpa suck, and how i changed from my old ways.

I appreciate any suggestions since i am currently an army of one.

TCR - look around on LSN and you'll see a few lucky splitters. Nothing else will fix that GPA.

Get a 170+ and apply early decision to UVA.

Though do you want to do law or just don't wanna be in the real world?

Recap, I am taking the lsat on oct, and am committed to doing well the first time. I don ` t want to waste time.

So, i can` t apply for early admission, as you can tell.

Yes you can. Schools ED deadlines are after Oct LSAT is released.

Just get your LORs ready now.

You aren't getting T13 without EDing if this cycle is as bad as last.

Once you have your bachelors degree, subsequent grades don't matter. Your gpa is set. Oh and its "raise", not "rise".

Well, I do not know about TCR, but I know that LSN stands for LawSchoolNumbers.com.

TCR = the correct answer. He was agreeing that you need a high LSAT.

LORs stands for Letters of Recommendations.

Definitely not cool, Letter of Recommendations. Get them now, because it takes months.

There were sticklers about 3.0 floor with barely a 170 this past cycle.

So, does this mean if i have a masters degree, and got a gpa of 4.00 for the master, it would still not effect my chances of applying to law school in a good way?

IIRC they were rounding to 3.0.

It would be a decent soft, that's it. And before you ask what a soft is, look it up. There's a search function in the forum.

Make sure you have someone, or multiple people, proof-read your personal statement...

Your Master's GPA will be calculated into LSDAS, so it couldn't hurt (Assuming you got a 3.85+ cumulative).

You didn't answer though... do you want to go to law school, or do you just not want to be in the real world?

Do you have any UG debt?

No it won't; stop giving bad advice.

It won't. It will help but so minimally that it isn't really worth it just to get it as a soft for law school.

Extra degrees will NOT change the GPA that the law school admissions people look at. Your GPA is set in stone once your first degree is awarded. Your only realistic shot at getting into a top school is to get a very high LSAT score and apply early decision. You should make sure that all your application materials are ready to go ASAP if you are planning to apply this year.

Did you retake classes during undergrad? If so, your LSAC-calculated GPA is likely to be significantly lower than you think, and since you are critically near the magic 3.0 line, this may seriously affect your chances. I retook about 4 classes and my LSAC GPA was ~0.25 lower than the GPA on my transcript.

I'm not sure it's all that decent of a soft. Like 25% of all law school admits have a graduate degree...

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
