% of students who use TLS?
Guesstimate how many students at your school are on TLS.
Just curious if most law students know about this site or if its just a small select sample.

I'd guess the number is actually pretty low.

Very low at my T50 school. I only know of a few posters. Others may lurk though.

I presume the number of lurkers is higher than posters just about anywhere. Its odd though that a low percentage of students have visited this site. I assume a lot of people get turned off by the negativity maybe?

I just think there are a lot of people who don't take full advantage of the available resources on the Internet, assuming law school will be just like undergrad, only a little tougher.

From online statistics, what I can gather in the incidence of as much as 15% for one school and as low as 0 for 39 other schools.
The mean is around 2-3%.
OL's-about 600-850 every cycle.

Re: % of students who use TLS?
I wouldnt even know where to find statistics, but what drew me to the forums originally was information on admissions. TLS was my one and only source for constant checking to see if anyone else from my target schools had received any word. I checked this site before I checked my status checker, and ultimately received word via this site that someone from my first choice had been rejected, only to go immediately to my status checker and receive the same news.
That being said, I would estimate whatever percentage from each school participate on this forum is about 5% of those who were avid readers during the admissions cycle up until their decision.
Since thhe cycle this year is pretty much done, I only find one other poster from the T4 school I was ultimately accepted at, which probably has something to do with the fact my school is not a "Top Law School".
It seems those who stick around enjoy online forums and met some online aquaintances who make them laugh. I personally stick around for this reason, and of course some useful information from time to time for clueless 0L's like me who don't quite know what we're getting into.

Re: % of students who use TLS?
Everything I learned about law admissions, I learned from TLS (and from here, How to Get into Top Law Schools, lawschoolpredictor, lawschoolnumbers, now Getting to Maybe etc.). I have never heard a good thing said about a pre-law advisor on this site: that is pretty amazing considering how long I've been on here. I'd bet that those who do not use this site tend to do worse in their admissions cycles, and the relationship is causal.

Re: % of students who use TLS?
TLS has been wonderful and I'm so glad Mr. Ken took the time (and money!) to create this site and keep it going.
I found it by accident. I typed in something on google and some thread from TLS popped up. I read through it and started going through the site and thats when I realized I had stumbled upon something so great.
Im inclined to believe that the lower you go in ranking the lower the usage of TLS is amongst those schools students. The opposite is also true in my opinion, the higher in ranking you go the greater the usage of TLS is amongst those schools students.
Although since TLS is mostly 0L's its tough to figure out exactly how many STUDENTS at these high ranked schools use TLS. Hence we return to the question posed in this thread...

Can you explain how you arrived at these numbers? I'm surprised it is so low...SplitterPride wrote:From online statistics, what I can gather in the incidence of as much as 15% for one school and as low as 0 for 39 other schools.

Re: % of students who use TLS?
My guess is that there is a HIGH percentage of students who have visited this site. I don't think you can have an internet connection, be considering law school, and not have visited this site at least a few times. I had hit this site 10-20 times long before I became a poster.
That being said, I bet the poster count is VERY low. 2-3% of all students probably isn't a stretch. Getting people to create a free account and use it is suprisingly difficult. I don't think the negativity is turning people off. If they can't handle negativity, they can't handle the internet.
Easy way to figure it out though. Just find a count of total registered TLS posters, and compare to count of total LS students in America.

Im Harry Potter of the Digital Age.
I have a magic wand called google, but lately Bing! gets me to answers faster...Los Linkssss are crazy...information overload...you can plug the stats from website traffic sites and compile in on excel, run the new windows formulas and it should spit you all some numbers within the range.
P.S. Sorry to surprise you Cornell guy, turns out you got 33 confirmed members of class of 2013 (to date) which is about what... 16% of the incoming student body...not bad not bad.

Re: % of students who use TLS?
I'm just surprised the estimated numbers aren't higher. Anytime I look up law school I usually end up with 3 like links to TLS on the first page of my search. I usually skip over message boards but after I couldn't find any other help, I broke down and started using this site. You'd think if people were doing their research, more would end up here.

There were a surprising number of TLS readers at the WUSTL ASD in February.

Would have thought the same thing, but I know lotsss of 0Ls (and even ls students) who have never even heard of (let alone visit or post) TLSlegalease9 wrote:My guess is that there is a HIGH percentage of students who have visited this site. Yeah, that's exactly why- people aren't doing their research. If people did their research there would be a lot less people going to law school (most people are still under the assumption that law school = easy/definite 160K per year).Kobe_Teeth wrote:You'd think if people were doing their research, more would end up here.
I do pre-law peer advising at my school and you'd be surprised how many people I see who are already a couple months into their senior year, want to go to law school, and have no idea what is on the LSAT. The vast majority of pre-law students don't have any idea what the current legal market looks like. I also see a couple people a week that are banking on getting into Michigan with their 160 LSAT. People simply don't do their research. BTW, I go to a top public UG.

Also, do you find that a lot of people you advise have decided to go law school on a whim? It seems like many people are trying to avoid the economy and they think becoming a lawyer is a great way to accomplish this and a great way to get filthy rich.

Re: % of students who use TLS?
This has been my experience exactly. I know a lot of people who plan on attending law school in the next year or two and the ignorance about law school and the legal field is pretty surprising. None have heard of TLS; none have any idea about the job market (or lack thereof); very few have any idea of what to expect in law school; and very few are taking a proactive approach to studying for the LSAT and putting together a solid application. Everyone just kinda casually slaps together an application, sends a few apps to mediocre (or worse) schools, and banks on that sweet six figure job.cinefile 17 wrote:Yeah, that's exactly why- people aren't doing their research. I know I don't have any personal stake in what people around me do with their lives, but its kinda frustrating to watch. You'd think such a huge life decision would call for a bit more in preparation and research. But hey, six figures of debt with no way out is gonna be a hell of a wake up call.

According to TLS 2013: 11/220ish, so exactly 5% of Emory. Probably over 10% actually. Hopefully no one in my section reads the lounge . . .
