Which field of law is right for me?
First off, let me just apologize for that ambiguous term…
I’ve heard some differing opinions when it comes to the timeframe of making this decision. Some have said don’t specialize at all, others say it’s not necessary until after your first year, and my common sense tells me I need to know before I choose a school, so I can pick the school with the best program in the field that I select.
Now I’m worried that I need to figure this out before I start my personal statement. No specific area of law is a “passion” or a “calling” for me. Will not addressing this makes admissions folks view me as a dreamer without a plan?
As far as actually making this decision, where do I start? I’ve got a short list based on very general descriptions of the fields (IP, corporate, tax), but as I said, I can’t say I have a singular passion for one. Practically, I think the decision would best be made based on job numbers and average salary in each field. Ideally, I’d like to know a whole lot more before making any sort of decision.
Sorry for the orgy of questions; any help is appreciated.
(I’ve been working as a newspaper journalist for the last three years, maybe I should go into bankruptcy law…)

All law schools have pretty much the same curriculum. You don't pick a school based on their sub-specialty. Go to the best one you can get in to that meets your needs.

Ignore speciality rankings. And no you don't need to know what type of law you want to practice before going to law school.

specialty rankings are just a way for some LS to convince unwitting students to pay sticker 'cause they have a great international law program!!!!'

Everyone knows that if a school is ranked number one in international law, then you should definitely attend that school over Yale.dominkay wrote:omg I just heard someone say this recently and I didn't even know what to saygwuorbust wrote:specialty rankings are just a way for some LS to convince unwitting students to pay sticker 'cause they have a great international law program!!!!'
