relax about fear going to law school
After following this site for awhile, I decided to talk with a friend of mine who is an economics professor at a top state school. We both came to the agreement that the risk of going to law school, depending on your "goals" is not as huge as this board makes it out to be. I think that it is a fairly obvious statement that no one can or should go to law school with the thought of making over $100K starting out (if you do, congrats!) however, if you go to a decent law school, if you get good grades and if you do the basic business sense (networking...) then you will be fine, your salary will increase if you do what needs to be done.
On another note, people looking into attending law school starting next year (2011) are actually better off than most. With the economy most likely to be back on a upwards trend by that time at least, companies will still be adverse to spending alot of money, while at the same time needing legal employment (business, law firms, govt., everything) with this comes these fresh new graduates who will (if you are smart) be willing to take a lesser salary than people who have been out of law school for a few years and have experience.
I work corporate law at an insurance company, it might not be the most exciting thing that peolpe look forward to when going to law school but it pays well (over $100K salary), vacation time, and definite growth and my company is still even now hiring new in-house attorneys. I graduated from law school over a couple of years ago so I still consider myself fresh. I went to a good law school (Rutgers) graduated top 25% of my class and networked like you are supposed to. I dont believe that I am the exception as many of my friends who graduated in the past few years all have respectable law careers earning between $75-$100K in various fields.
Go to law school, study and take it seroiusly, do law review, do things that set you apart, make connections with professors and other ppl you can tell take law school serious and in my personal experience...the risk isnt all that great!

Re: relax about fear going to law school
1) Not everyone who works hard will be top 25%
2) Not everyone who works hard will get law review
These two DO make you an exception to the rule
3) If you graduated a few years ago then it seems like you missed out on the current law school hiring
4) If people are taking out loans for the full cost of law school, $75k might not be enough, particularly in cities that have most of the firm jobs

Nola alt?
And you're right. If you don't care about getting a job, law school is not risky at all.

hp, personally, I like your post. My guess is that naysayers will come in very quickly and tear it apart though.
I wish there was more focus on some of the other career paths, besides working in a firm, on this site. However, since most of the posters are either prospective or current law students, there is not much information available.

Is it just me or are these "be more positive about law school!" posts getting more frequent recently?

Well we all know that they can't really be from people who got jobs out of schools like Rutgers, because of course those people don't really exist. Or if they do actually exist then they are the exception to the rule that everyone else who has graduated from Rutgers for the last 100 years is homeless living on the streets eating food out of dumpsters.kazu wrote:hahahahaMatthies wrote:Damn I take 2 mins to go take apoop and the shitshow has already started![]()

I think therefore that these single post "life is good if you work hard" threads are just alts for the scam bloggers. They post a happy story that seems so implausible to them (law student not in t14 gets job doing legal stuff) so they can come in and post links to their scamblogs that share the "real story" of the legal profession.

OP, can you please explain why your IP address is connected with three other posters that are 0Ls? Do you live in some halfway house for aspiring law students and you are their misguided mentor?

It's the United States, dude. You could throw a grenade in a soybean field and kill 2-3 lawyers.PKSebben wrote:I mean I suppose they could all be posting from a coffee shop or something, but it's not in what I'd consider a lawyer metropolis. Four law students in [Redacted]? Bullshit.
