Question to people whose parents are lawyers or are lawyers

Post by thatsnotmyname » Fri Jun 25, 2010 9:16 pm

In another thread, I said:
This is purely anecdotal, but on another forum a few years back someone started a thread for lawyers who were parents and just asked whether they would encourage their children to become lawyers. Virtually every single parent said that they would discourage their children from entering the profession.
So basically, if you have a parent who is/was a lawyer how have they responded to your interest in law school? Discouraged you, encouraged you, indifferent, etc? If you are currently a lawyer yourself, how would you respond if you had a child who wanted to become a lawyer?

My father in law is a lawyer and has encouraged me at every step.

He was top 10% at UVA, worked biglaw for a few years, and then started his own firm (GC for school districts) which has become very successful. The major thing he has impressed upon me is the importance of the business side of law (rainmaking, client maintenance, etc., which is underemphasized on these board, if you ask me) and the fact that your goal should always be to end up working for yourself, which is where the money and satisfaction is.

HTH.

Edit: I should note that my since father passed away when I was 18 and I've been with my HS sweetheart (now wife) since then, we have more of a father/son type relationship than typical in-laws.

My father has been very encouraging. As was my grandfather.
