Study Abroad GPA --> LSDAS GPA
I searched the boards and went back quite a few pages and STILL found conflicting information... so here's my post:
I studied abroad last spring for one semester. I went through Syracuse University (I do not attend this school). My UG transcript displays the grades and received credit but it does not factor into my UG GPA. Will LSDAS accept these grades? Hopefully yes, as I did quite well and it would seriously boost my GPA.
I also cannot figure out how to list this on my LSAC account. I tried Foreign Institutions, no space. Do I just put it under regular colleges? Syracuse is obviously an American university but I studied on another continent...
EDIT:
I called LSAC and they said that since the sponsoring institution was Syracuse University, I do have to send the transcript and the grades WILL count. I am supposed to list it as "other institutions attended" and not foreign institutions. The woman on the phone led me to believe that if I went through another institution, such as IES, the grades would not count. I personally recommend anyone in this situation call and make sure if they have any doubt. Took two minutes.

Re: Study Abroad GPA --> LSDAS GPA
Had the same issue with my grades from the University of Amsterdam. There was nowhere to 'add' the school and generate a coversheet for the transcripts, so I just had them send my transcript to the address LSAC lists. I'm leaving it to LSAC to determine whether they need them or not (like you, they would help my GPA substantially-I hope they include them because I was directly enrolled and those classes were not softies).
I'm aware that they state in one part of their website that they want them only if you studied for 'the equivalent of more than one year' in the States (in terms of time or credits, though? They do not say.), but in another part of the site they say they want you to send your transcripts from overseas study. I figure it's better to play it safe and let them determine whether they are included.

Re: Study Abroad GPA --> LSDAS GPA
Interesting...For my summer study abroad program at Lund University in Sweden, those grades definitely counted and were factored into my UG GPA. And they help considering I got A's in both classes, plus they were worth 5.0 quarter credits instead of just 4.0.
I hope they don't take those classes out of the equation. Since it's part of my transcript and UG GPA I should be good, right?

Re: Study Abroad GPA --> LSDAS GPA
That's what I was reading and am still confused... If I studied with IES or another study abroad company, I know they wouldn't count. It's just that it was through Syracuse... I'm listed as a Syracuse student w/ a SU ID and get a SU transcript, etc. So I thought maybe they'd be more "official." I tried calling but got a menu forever and just hung up because I was at work.xyzzzzzzzz wrote:http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 22&t=80326
Pretty sure LSAC doesn't require them. It sucks, since your grades would boost your gpa.
I don't know how to include the semester but I will send the transcript regardless.
Fingers crossed!

Please post an update if/when you know. My international transcripts will be arriving at LSAC tomorrow, so I'll post as soon as I know anything further.

I'm almost certain LSAC will not count the study abroad grades on your UG's transcript. They will need a transcript from either Syracuse or the foreign university.Canarsie wrote:I searched the boards and went back quite a few pages and STILL found conflicting information... so here's my post:

Re: Study Abroad GPA --> LSDAS GPA
I have kind of the same thing going on. I studied abroad with NYU, had an NYU id/email/whatever. However there is no indication of this program on my real undergraduate transcript at all. I've just been lazy and haven't had NYU send the grades to my school because I don't actually need the credits, I just studied abroad for the experience.
Do you think this makes it more or less likely that LSAC will count my study abroad grades? I'm not sure from the transcript if you could even tell I was abroad, or if it will just look like for some reason I took classes at NYU for the semester.

I have no idea... but when you find out please let us all know! I have to wait to send my transcripts because I am applying for a fee waiver and it's driving me crazy...kayljsh wrote:I have kind of the same thing going on. I did an SIT program, and it counted in my LSDAS GPA. Should be the same for Syracuse - if it is an educational institution in the United States, it counts. You have to send directly from the study abroad institution (Syracuse in this case).

Re: Study Abroad GPA --> LSDAS GPA
Not sure if this has been answered, but I went through the same thing. You must get the transcript from the school granting the grades. Your UG transcript will not suffice. Did you study abroad through a program? Did that program create your transcript? Did you have a school of record? Mine went through Spelman College. Even tough I never went there, my transcript shows up as Spelman College on the LSAC academic summary but it designates my transcript as a study abroad record.Canarsie wrote:I searched the boards and went back quite a few pages and STILL found conflicting information... so here's my post:

So those grades contributed to your LSDAS GPA? Or were they just displayed on the side as a "hey cool look at that" kind of thing?hiromoto45 wrote:Not sure if this has been answered, but I went through the same thing. Yes. So if you don't report , there will a gap in your academic history for that semester or year that law schools see and you will be considered incomplete.Canarsie wrote:So those grades contributed to your LSDAS GPA? This is around the time last year, I started to compile my transcripts. It is a confusing process and you have to contact whoever you need to get the right transcripts.

Re: Study Abroad GPA --> LSDAS GPA
Just called LSAC, they told me that because I paid my France study abroad tuition to my US university that I did not have to send a transcript from my U in France.
To clarify - my grades from that semester are all listed on my US transcript but as transfer credit with no grades.

I went for a semester. I am applying in this cycle so I haven't checked if they count for LSDAS - but as stated above, I paid the tuition straight to the university of california system, and the grades are listed on my 'unofficial transcript' that we can download via the student center page.Canarsie wrote:For how long did you go? Always, always just call LSAC and ask. There's a lot of grey area regarding this subject and I don't think TLS-ers will be able to give you a black-and-white answer, especially given your relatively unique circumstances.

Yeah regardless of answer given this was my plan. It's just difficult because their working hours coincide with mine. It's not particularly urgent so I will try to give them a call some time this or next week.kazu wrote:Always, always just call LSAC and ask. It will accept the grades - especially because they are though SU. I studied abroad through Butler University, had Butler send the transcripts and they were all factored in.Canarsie wrote:I searched the boards and went back quite a few pages and STILL found conflicting information... so here's my post:

I can't though remember how I listed my study abroad. It doesn't really matter how specifically you list it though. Just get it on there somewhere.
