"Jake, one day your mom and I are going to die and we're going to leave you a lot of money. Stop worrying about loans!"

Am I an asshole and a bad son for finding this semi-comforting?
I'm glad I'm not the only one whose family is batshit insane at random intervals.

Of course the problem is that you end up being just as bad as the rest of your family, as you're learning now.

You should find it slightly comforting because it is true. Everyone's parents are going to die, you should be thankful that yours think enough of you to leave you some $$$ when they go.

I am comforted by the promise that my family will help me if I can't repay my loans, though they don't have a pile of money to leave me. You are lucky, and you shouldn't feel guilty.

The gaping abyss between most posters on here and the real world (for most of this world) never ceases to amaze me. Parents paying for college, leaving kids money, etc. just seems like some strange myth to me. I hardly knew anyone growing up that ever went to college and it was an accomplishment for many I knew to even graduate hs.

You might stay up at night wondering what your parents will do with their accumulated wealth after social security implodes in on itself and the government significantly raises the estate tax (death tax) in an attempt to fix the problem. After you're done worrying about, you know, your parents dying and how horrible job prospects are for fresh JDs.

To take it a step further, one day you'll die also. Any debt and life failure you've accumulated will immediately cease to matter. Sleep soundly.

They probably won't die for 40 years. US government will pay it off before then.
Plus your dad will probably drop dead, leaving it all to mother. Who will use it for assisted living for twenty years.

Or worse. Your dad dies soon, and your mom remarries, leaving all your money to some random dude.

I'm not sure if your intention was to actually make me feel better, but it did. Life is short. Tomorrow morning we are all going to wake up and be 80 years old. Law School debt will be something we chuckle about.

I find it comforting. I could see how it might unhinge others. Whether or not it helped you to sleep or caused you to have a minor melt down, I would have been alright with the result.

Actually, you'll probably realize you wasted your life pursuing a JD and a career in law instead of doing something meaningful and fulfilling with your life. Maybe by "chuckle about" you meant "force a painful laugh as you realize that a horrible decision you made in your 20's ruined your life".

Damn. I am going to start supporting my parents soon, maybe right around when I get out of law school. I am proud that I will be able to do it, but it would be super comforting if I won't have to. I wouldn't even worry about $$$ they can leave me. Back to buying lottery tickets.

Enjoy law school!

This is why my mom named both me and my sister specifically (well and my dad too) as beneficiaries on her life insurance :D

Although my parents have no money, I am certainly comforted by the fact they will someday die.

+1 ... This is very true! Debt is an important consideration but don't let it limit your choices too much.

I can't believe your the only one that thought that was funny. I laughed so maniacally when I typed that I almost spilt gin and tonic on the keyboard.
