Outline Length

Post by BearDownChicago » Thu Feb 18, 2010 12:42 am

0L here wondering how long your outlines are at the end of the semester. The success in law school post by the NYU student talks about outlining the 1,000 page Hornbooks and then condensing it into a 3 page outline.

What are some of the longer/shorter ones?

Really just depends on the class and your personal style. You might not even always outline. For example, for Torts I just made a 1-pg cover sheet listing all major issues & put it in a binder w/my class & reading notes & tabbed them.

yeah, i agree it depends on the class and your understanding of it. depends what you put in it also. i like to put hypos and explanations in mine, some dont. i think under 50 pages is generally a good spot, but again, it doesn't matter. it depends on you.

My Conlaw outline was 12 pages, and I kicked that class's ass.

Nobody with half a brain outlines a hornbook. Except in certain rare circumstances (professor both authored and taught directly from a hornbook) it would be idiocy.

Outline length varies enormously. I've seen full-class outlines as short as 7 pages and as long as 60, and heard plenty of stories of longer. Length of outline is one of many things you shouldn't worry about much but probably will. Ah, law school.

Fixed for ya (wouldn't want you thinking you could get away with only one outline per semester!)

My outlines for my 4 substantive classes were 30-60 pages long. I condensed them to 10-page summaries, then to 2-3 page checklists.
